Breather Cap Won't Budge!
« on: November 19, 2013, 07:59:34 PM »
CB350F Restoration:  I'm ready to get the engine out.  The stupid Clymer manual says NOTHING about removing the oil pan or the breather cap, so I spent a good hour spraining my wrist trying to wrench the engine out carefully.  Of course I then read about it on the forum, and you wise people say to take the breather cap and the oil pan... Makes sense.

The bolts are out of the breather cap, but it will not budge.  I've taken the rubber mallet to it, but it ain't budging.

Suggestions?

Can you tell me what you are calling the breather cap?

Well I look at it and looks like just four blots to take out and maybe try a dead blow hammer should tap off.

I'll give it a shot- thanks!

I'm just calling it what the manual calls it.  It's the "plate" that sits over the cam shaft, I believe.

Not the oil pan! the oil filter housing.

Just remove the breather cap on top of the valve cover and the oil filter housing.
Then the frame will lift off of the engine easier.

Read all of this carefully and slowly.

EDIT:

OOPS! Sorry its a 550!

Would you recommend tipping it over and then lifting the frame off the engine?  It seems like folks do it both ways around here.

Would not bother, its the baby four..lighter. Most of us can get a 750 in and out and it is much heavier.
Heavier than in the 70s and 80s, cuz the 750 motor seemed easier to move than today..

If you already have the bike stripped down fairly far, with the wheels and the front end removed then I would lay it on its side and remove the frame from the engine.  If it is still a roller and you do not intend to tear it down any further the get another set of hands and slide the motor out the side.

Thanks for all the input, folks.  Breather cap cap off (eventually) with a little whacking. Oil pan popped off the bottom.  I'm doing a full teardown, so I only needed to lift the engine up and over onto a crate.  It wasn't TOO heavy.

Smooth sailing, although this is when the trouble starts...
