If I were you I would focus on making it a functional motorcycle first, then worry about cosmetics. There are lots of cut frames running around without the brace kits, so that isn't the biggest issue. If you aren't locked into the idea of a restoration, you have more freedom to build the bike any way you fancy, without having to buy a lot of vintage parts. The K7 17" rear wheel can be made to work with either an off-set rear sprocket or an earlier sprocket carrier on the chain side, and a smaller tire may solve the rubbing on the brake side. Consider this project as a cheap education. :D

Stop worrying about everything..it needs going thru.

Go thru it, see what you got, take it from there.
It has Andrews coil hopefully a pair.
Question for you, you post 3 pucs ofthe cut frame.. Why not show the front . Then we can help you..

That one came out real crappy, and I was holding the tank with one hand ;) I'll add some as soon as I get off work, there is a little bit of sun light to take good pix. i will also post pix starting from headlight to taillight, but perhaps in the project forum, try and keep all issues in one place rather than hijacking my own threads :). I suppose I can let this one be my training project like you guys suggested, maybe down the line I'll find one in better shape and use what I learn with this one and go for a full blown resto then. For this one, how far fetched do you guys think it is to make it look like this ;) ;) (or somewhat like it)

We dont need a pic of the front end of that tube, if you just tell us how much of it is there, if it has say an inch or so, you can work with it.

When the motor is out a good welder should be able to fix you up.  I remember a thread where someone said some of the vintage drag bikes ran without those pieces(fwtw)...Larry

Easily repaired by any decent welder. It can be fixed and it shouldn't cost too much. Ask around, good welders earn their reputation and somebody you know probably knows one, you just don't know it yet.

What do you think? I'd like to keep welding on pipes as the last option. There is just about an inch left on both sides on the front, I hope a frame kit is not out of the picture just yet....

Can someone please upload a close up of how the center stand spring clamps to the frame? I have the stand on, but its dragging because the spring isn't pulling it high enough with the hook shaped rod that came with the pivot stand (seller on ebay said it was from a 550 but works with 750). Trying to get it to stand on the center stand so I can take the rear wheel apart...

Been a while but here it is, finally got to taking the wheel apart. Got stuck pretty quickly but here is a picture of the bushes/spacers as they came apart as requested. Left is laid out, right is pretty much the one bog thing so far. Looks right for the most part, but want to be sure that it is in fact a 72 wheel.

Try showing side view ..length.......instead of end view ..diameter.
And a ruler it the pic or a measurement would be very helpful.

Something I've always found helpful, was for whatever section of the bike you are working on, print out the parts break down from one of the online venders OEM catalog.  You can then identify each and every washer/nut/spacer etc that you have, and what parts are missing.

http://www.westernhillshondayamaha.com/fiche_select2.asp?category=Motorcycles&make=Honda&year=1972&fveh=190505

Here's a link to what you are working on now:

http://www.westernhillshondayamaha.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=4326618&category=Motorcycles&make=Honda&year=1972&fveh=190505

I think you are doing too many things at once.  Break the bike down into individual sub assemblies and work on one problem at a time.  When that's fixed,  THEN move on to another sub assembly.  Bouncing around from problem to problem just adds to the sense of the project is too much to handle.  Fight individual battles, rather than trying to win the war in one fight. ;D ;D ;D

NOT to confuse matters any more (maybe another topic entirely) - when you get the wheel issue sorted, don't forget to check the condition of the swing arm bushings.

scottly: Thanks for the reference pic, I picked up a caliper (needed it anyway), will post a pic with measurement as soon as I get home.

jerry h: This is my workspace (only now the table isn't empty)

I have been using it extensively and so far things check out. The measurements though, I'll get that done today.

And yea, I've been juggling a lot of problems because I have small pockets of time where I try and make progress. Would love to be able to get it on the road in spring. I wan't to work on the engine fully focused, so I haven't touched it yet. I have some time off coming after thanksgiving and I'll be putting everything aside and working just on the engine, cleaning it, inspecting it, acquiring parts as needed, bagging and tagging. When I go back to work, I will get back  to the chassis and keep aiming for small wins :)

Thanks to everybody for their help and patience.

I couldn't remember the reference pic so I took two diff pix, yet still failed to match scottly's ref. Here they are anyway, looks like its well under 77 so I'm hoping the wheel is correct. Also took the measurements for the spaces on both sides of the sprocket. From what a nightmare I had getting those four nuts to let go of the sprocket, I don't think this wheel was ever taken apart. Not to mention all the crap on the inside..

In your first picture you do not appear to have the outer spacer in place when measuring to the table top. Look at scottly's picture and you will notice the outer spacer is in place when measuring to the table top. With the spacer in place you should have the 77mm you're looking for...

Of course you need to take care of cush drive brakes and bearing chain, sprockets and swingarm bushings while you are at it. But here are some pics. to look at.
Look at this to see what is going on.This photo will help you identify if you have a 69-76 or 77-78 carrier.
Left carrier ( early) has a 26mm height. Right carrier ( late) has a 36mm height.

In your first picture you do not appear to have the outer spacer in place when measuring to the table top. Look at scottly's picture and you will notice the outer spacer is in place when measuring to the table top. With the spacer in place you should have the 77mm you're looking for...
Its just not showing in the pic, but the outer space is there. Tricky to hold the caliper upright with one hand and snap a pic with the other. Also, I thought 77mm was for K7+ wheel and mine should be less...? Or do I have it backwards?

Ahhhh.... I forgot you were trying to verify the earlier wheel. The CycleX site linked above has some good pictures with dimensions for distinguishing early from later hubs.

Yours should be about about 10mm less than the 77 style

From the fiche, it looks like the 72s had a different looking cush/final flange. Are the diameters of the final flange and the hub same for all years? I found a pretty good shape final flange off of a 72 on craigslist and trying to confirm before I buy. If the diameter is the same, then I'll jump on it......

With what has been done to your frame and you don't have the tubing that was removed this may be your best bet. BUT be sure to measure first and get the measurements of the kit.
