Rear Wheel : This just made my heart sink.
« on: August 29, 2013, 05:05:43 PM »
Just noticed that the rear wheel is grinding on some part of the rear end assembly/swing arm. Just bought it last Sunday and I thought it was hard to move because of the bad front brake the seller told me about. Please look at the pix, any advice on how to correct this? I really hope this is not a major disassembly requiring fix.

What is the tire size? Is the tire centered that closely on both sides of the swingarm?

Get us the tire size first and then we can work with that. In either case check to see if the chain adjusters are out the same amount on each side

If you get real close to the swingarm and adjuster assembly you can see the marks to aid in adjustment. The markings on these honda swingarms are pretty good to be able to set them by. It really isn't a huge deal tho, just some rubbing you can adjust out

Some people put too large of tires, could be a worn out chain possibly. On my friends kz the retard PO had the rear wheel practically sideways in the arm to compensate for the worn out chain

It is the brake stay rod/torque rod and rear tire. Looking down at the swingarm. Big interference

Sincere apologies for the crappy pix, its my cell phone. I will dig out my 10MPix camera and post some better ones. Tire size is 130/90-17. Its not the swing arm, its the smaller arm connecting the frame and the rear drum.

It looks like the tire is not aligned properly!
Loosen the axle and match the adjuster so it centers the wheel and make sure the chain and sprockets are in line also

If it is just a 130/90 then the tire is adjusted way off center or the wheel is laced off to the right side. Like said before , check to make sure the wheel is centered first!!  A 130/90 is NOT too wide for a CB750 but is doesn't give much wiggle room!!

The bike didn't come with a center stand. Any suggestions how to mount it up and attempt realignment? More detailed pix of the adjusters when I get some daylight, I promise.

Loosen up the rear axle as that should have plenty of torque on it. Chock the front wheel from the front and jack it up with a wood block finagled under the bike towards the back. It is essentially what the center stand does, just with the stop for it

I used come along to lift the bike up before I had center stand.  It is not that heavy, joist will hold it up fine.

If possible, I would get a center stand, that's a good feature to have.

You don't need the rear wheel off the ground to centre it, or to adjust the chain. Stop complicating matters.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

To get wheel up,lean on kickstand, put block under case bolts below the point cover..  Use a few 3/4 plywood shims ,or a small piece of 2x4 to level it if necessary..
 Very simple..

Yeah sure you don't need it but jacking it up takes all of five minutes, big whoop. And since it is a new to him bike he should check out a bunch of other crap with it up already

You do need the rear wheel up.  The wheel and chain need to be rotated  to see if there are tight spots.  If there are, the chain will need to be adjusted at that spot...Larry

Are there any spacers underneath the brake bar that's rubbing, where it connects to the brake hub?  Also, look to make sure the marks on the chrome chain adjusters are on the same spots on each side.  There are notches in the swing arm, and a notch in each chain adjuster, and the two sides should mirror each other.

Hey I had the tire rub on my first k1... For some reason the tire was to wide... Others stated the 130 would fit  but not on mine... Got new tires and I was good to go....

If you were closer I would help you out.. I learned all on here from the site and members.. I am not the best nor even that good at working on the bikes but I can get a non runner running pretty decent.

Here are some better pix with markings. Looks like the wheel is pretty centered, and there isn't much slack in the chain, so I guess its too big a tire. I will try and mount it up on two jacks tomorrow to get the rear wheel off the ground and see if its wobbling and rubbing on one spot or if it is constant contact.

The bike is question is an early bike with a 17" wheel. My guess is a PO somehow tried to fit the wider hub into the narrower early swing-arm? I would suspect the chain alignment is off as well.

What? You cant push the bike back and forward with the weight on it to really check for tight spots?
