WTF tranny
« on: August 30, 2013, 12:21:16 PM »
I just got the rear wheel back on after replacing the tire.  I took her out on the road for a slow test ride to make sure I had the chain tension and everything right and was noticing some extra loud clutch rattle.  Pulled into the driveway and put it on the center stand to see what the rattle was all about and noticed the rear wheel wouldn't turn.  When it did, I could hear a clicking noise coming from behind the shifter cover.  So I removed the shifter and everything looked like it should but the shifter will not actuate properly.  It seems loose as well.  I hadn't had an issue with the clutch really until now.  Also, i was able to spin the rear with the clutch engaged but after more tries it seems to be getting more difficult.  The actuater arm doesn't seem to want to behave properly either.  Could you guys offer any guidance with this issue?

Won't shift into gear, back wheel locked

just went and tried it.  Still no-go.  There is a point right before it hits a gear where the wheel will spin, but even with the shifter depressed fully the wheel stops when the gear hits.

? I have always been able to spin the wheel when it goes into gear.  As well as if the clutch is pulled the wheel can spin.  Maybe I mistook something?

Well, I have been fooling with it and was about to put it back together but the rear wheel won't spin even with the clutch lever pulled.  There is also a clunking noise in the transmission and I am wondering if something broke or is jamming it?  Wheel spins fine in neutral but will not budge one bit in any other gear even with the clutch pulled.  I attempted adjusting the clutch cable but it hasn't changed anything.

You're kicking your own ass here.

The "rattle" in neutral is a loose chain, which you're spinning backwards, so the slack is on the opposite side, and it rubs on the case.

The wheel shouldn't turn at all by hand when it's in gear.  If it did, it would not propel you.  With the clutch pulled in and the engine off, it can be difficult to turn the wheel, and it's really not even a necessary test- the running engine and warm oil will allow the clutch to release properly.

Tighten the drive chain to proper slack, and go ride- you've just proven that your clutch works properly.

haha, alright alright.  I just get paranoid about this bike.  It likes to let me down at times and now that it is running I must be looking for it ::)

:D  Easy to over think things- I'm pretty sure we've all been there a time or two!
