Something I want to share cb550
« on: September 18, 2013, 10:22:16 AM »
Last night I was riding home from my friends place to fix his car. I noticed my bike started bogging. Eventually it came to the point where my bike would die at every stop light. It was very hard to start I had to use the electric starter because the kickstart would not do it and I would gas out. After about 20 or so stop lights of doing this the bike came to a stop and would not start ever. I noticed #4 headers was cold. Luckily I had bought mini screw driver key chains a Philips, flathead and a square head. What I did to diagnose this is I first un screwed the the drain bolts to see if carb 4 had gas. Which it was. Then I opened the ignition cover and used the flat head to clean/scratch the points of any carbon or dirt that may have gotten in the way. By this I had that same friend that I helped with do a clutch flush on his car come over. I went to kick start the bike and it fired no misfire or anything. I turned it off and pulled plug #4. It was clean.  So then I rode home with my friend following me and I made it. Come to this morning I sanded the points more to make sure it was clean, topped up the engine oil and rode to work. She ran with no hiccups or anything. I was pushing it in the highway and it ran beautiful.

Moral of the story.
Its really funny how things work out in life. If I hadn't spend that 3 $ screw driver key chain I wouldn't have had any way to clean the points  and fixed the problem the road. And if I hadn't helped my friend do his clutch he would have made it to where I was and see if the plugs were wet. (I currently dont have a place to put the tool kit in the bike) I had a police ask if I needed a tow truck I told him no. He called for one anyway. The truck was there waiting and the whole time I kept telling myself "no way my bike is going on that thing ever ever ever". And clean your points!

I'll definitely will check into that. I was in a rush to go to work so I quickly pulled the points plate out of another 550 engine and just took it with me to work just incase.

These bikes just have so much soul. Almost 40 years and its running beautiful. I don't ride one day without having someone compliment on the bike. The amount of work, frustration and sweat we put in these bikes to keep it running just makes it even more priceless.

I'll admit my bike is cafe'd and I know it's not all original but this is what the new generation likes and when I first signed up to this forum that's when I realized oh maybe I shouldn't have done this of that and save it for a guy who's actually restoring one. But if cafe is the thing that the new generation likes I'm all for it 100% it's nice to see more and more sohc4 out on the road. There's just too many super sports out on the road.

Or replace/supplement those points with an electronic ignition.  I put a Pamco unit on my 500 and the only ignition problems I've had since have all been loose plug caps.  I can't believe it, but I've had this Pamco on my bike for over two years now.  This years Rally will be the 3rd its been in.

I've had bad experiences with electronic Ignitions. The PO had a dyna s on it. After about 2 months with riding it started to short out. I would loose 1 or 2 cylinder. It was a headache to figure out that it was the ignition. First I thought carbs then coils so on and so forth. The pamco I hear is good though.

Couldn't agree more.
