How would you fix this PO carb "modification"?
« on: September 01, 2013, 08:11:44 AM »
Ok guys,

How would you go about fixing this? JB weld? Solder? TIG weld? Laser weld?

Cheers,
Adam

Kind of hard to tell but are you referring to the little holes drilled in the mouth bells ? Some JB would probably work.

That will be covered by the intake boot so it shouldn't matter.

Jb weld or some kind epoxy if you wanted to fill it I guess.  Or just use that other set by your foot :)

Yup, those little drilled holes.

These are 657Bs from a 75. I also have a really nice set of 064As on the bike right now.
Then I have a set of 657As with a cracked main jet that came with the bike (72).

I have to check and see what carb number it is, I think they are assembled wrong.

Why fill it..what if it gets injested?
Fill it to satisfy my OCD side :). Injestion is a big concern.

Better to leave it. Work on something that needs fixing.

easy fix for that cracked main jet tower-

.45 caliber shell casing with the cap removed . Taps right over and you don't have to use the brass ones either . If you have any gun nut buddies ask around. I keep some in my tool box for such an occasion . Works perfect , picked that up from some sohc chopper guys-  if you need a few let me know I can mail you some.

Don't throw that old Keihin carb away!

Have you ever picked up an old CB750 or bought carbs online, only to find that the cast in the bowl where the main jet screws in is FUBAR?

I stumbled onto a quick and easy way to fix that. Here is a list of the parts you will need:1..45 cal ACP pistol, loaded
2.one cat, irritating
3.old style carb, with splitting at main jet holder
4.metal cutting tool (hacksaw)
5.small, fine round file
6.a tube with about 3/8" ID and 1/2" OD thats about an inch long, you can probably find a spacer in your local Lowes/Depot hardware bins that will work.

Step 1: clean the carb on the tower where the main jet holder goes in.
Step 2: shoot the pistol at something, irritating cats are fairly gratifying.
Step 3: retrieve the spent casing and take it in your shop/garage, toss the remains of your neighbors irritating cat into the dog lot of another neighbor you don't like. Phone call to cat neighbor optional.
Step 4: cut the primer section off the casing leaving about 9/16".
Step 5: pinch all the cracked pieces down on the tip of the main jet tower and gently get your main jet holder nut started.
Step 6: slide and then gently tap the shell casing down onto the main jet holder tower with the spacer tube until it is tight.
Step 7: tighten main jet holder, reinstall main and idle jets, reassemble carb and ride.

I fixed one with a .45 acp once back in 2011. I used it in conjunction with a product called Seal All.

That is an excellent tip, and done in NC style. Down here in GA we're more likely to cap the nuisance squirrel than the cat but they just keep a 'comin'. Happy Labor Day, if you can avoid the rain drops.

Digging up this old thread, trying to remember what someone once said. Once upon a time someone on here explained why the PO drilled little holes in the mouth bells of the carbs. Some type of PODs or something.
