Key Trivia
« on: September 01, 2013, 04:32:49 PM »
hi

Do you have a 75-6 CB750F ?  Do you have the original key number? Would you be willing to post it?

I have, or have had, a total of 3 of them.  2 75's and a '76.

Here are my key numbers:  27809, 27089, and 20879.

I am curious as to how narrow a range of key numbers Honda actually used, despite the fact they were 5 digits long  (by comparison, the key numbers in the early 80s were only 3 digits)

Just curious!

A dealer told me there were 7 different keys for all early 750s, regardless of year. I think that in 1976 the system was revised and more keys were issued. I know that they used to have a small parts drawer thing with not that very many keys in it. If one came in with a key number, they would find the replacement precut key rather quickly. For any Honda bike model, not just 750s.

When I bought the '76, I worked summers for the dealer.  At that point, each new bike came with 4 keys.  The new owner got 2 and the dealer kept 2 in case of problems  (or repossession??).  Hence I have 4 for mine as I dug in his box and found the others.

That said, I am struck by the lack of range in my 3 numbers.  Either mathematical oddity or, as you suggest, there just weren't all that many.

you're on to me!!   Damn!

Actually if there are as few keys in some time periods as it seems,
stealing bikes is not all that difficult.  The '80s bikes seem to have only had 3 digit key numbers, most of which begin with "2".
