What's this bracket for?
« on: September 03, 2013, 04:22:42 PM »
1976 CB550F. What's this bracket for? I have what I believe to be an original bike and there was nothing in the bracket. My GF's CB400F has a similar bracket, but it seems to be for the clutch cable. I don't see how that would work for the clutch cable on the 550F.

They hold the No.s 1&4 spark plug wires, If correctly routed, the wires go up over the top of the engine, through the clip, then down to the plug. I suspect they did it this way to keep the wires away from the pipes, but that's just a guess...  Should be one on each side.

Nope...just the one on the right hand side. And I don't see any way that the plug wires would be long enough to go through it. Sort of awkward routing, too.

SohRon is correct. There should be two clips one on each side of the cam chain cover. That's how it's configured on my 550F.

Hmmm...well I'll be. I'll have to go have another look at it. There's definitely only the one, though.

So bolt another one on in the correct location and extend your ignition leads to make it original.  Are you up to making it "correct" or just curious?

I was mostly just curious. I'd never seen that on a 550 before.

Coils, wires, caps, etc. all look original. Just too short to fit in that bracket. Not a problem....I was mostly just curious.

My boots aren't tall enough to turn that direction.

Here is a shot of my stock 76 550F engine when I was tuning it up.Both plug wires are long enough to utilize the clips.Yours must have been trimmed down or the coil is from a different bike.

You might have them in the wrong locations. You should have two long caps and two short ones; the long caps go on 1&4, while the shorter two go on 2&3.
