Rear tire on front? WHY?
« on: August 16, 2013, 12:59:33 PM »
Ok, so I bought a 93 nighthawk 750 (I know not a SOHC, but I trust the opinions around here  :)).

Anyways I recently realized that the "new" tires that are on it are both for rear tires use only. Im at work and don't know what tires they are, can find out later.

Anyways I read a bunch of different opinions from its ok, to turning the tire backwards, to you will die on the bike. Do I need/should I swap the tire out for a few front one? Ive even heard of dealerships doing this saying its not a big deal? I have no idea who to listen to.

Thanks,
Adam

What tires are they?

I think I would contact the manufacturer for the definative answer.

That said, front/rear specific tires usually have slightly different tread designs because the front has to deal with turning forces. I would think that using a "rear" design on the front is certainly less than optimal, but for day-to-day casual street riding would not be death defying.

However, if you are planning to ride on curvy roads in a sprited fashion and/or regularly ride on wet curvy roads, even at moderate speeds, I would bite the bullet and get the proper front tire.

Thanks for the response
Ok, so I got home and checked it out. Front and rear are Bridgestone Battlax BT45R
Front 110/90 18 61H (says for rear use only)
Rear 140/70 17 66H

I also stopped by the local bike shop. They were all equally confused as to why you would put a rear tire on the front. Biggest issue would be poor handling, but for me I don't wanna think about any problems riding. So I think Ill end up swapping it out with a proper front tire. Gonna call Bridgestone to get a definitive answer though.

Also what the hell do you do with a partially used tire made in (1009).

Only 4 years old. Put an ad on Craigslist, someone will buy it if the price is low enough.

That is a popular size, not worth much but bet you could sell it for shipping charge.

Soooo,
That is quite a difference. Its amazing what happens when you put a front tire on a bike, it rides so much better. In all honesty, the bike handles much better.
For anyone who comes across a bike with a REAR ONLY tire on the front, don't turn it around, you can try to ride on it, but the best suggestion, just get the right tire and enjoy worry free riding.

Thanks for the help guys

Any suggestions what this Rear tire is worth? I see them on Ebay from $120 and Up. Got the replacement front for $110 offline. Local guy quoted $165.
