Since I moved north I am finding Robertson's all over the house . Drives me nuts, I have everything in my tool box except a Robertson, sigh.I went and bought a couple of bits. Not sure I am a fan, next thing their going to make me learn metric and start spelling Check with a fancy 'Cheque' . :)

Silly stamped steel points cover... if you lay the bike down there is almost nothing protecting the points. Luckily the 650 cover fits great.

Am I the only one that hates the frigging Philips screws that clamp the controls to the bars? If there are 6 screws : 4 are stripped and the other 2 are 1/4-20 aand not the correct length.

Another thing is the way the seats were upholstered.....its like dealing with a piece of bonnie and Clyde's last shootout when putting a new cover on. (I was going to make a rusty crocodiles tooth reference but figured.....ha. stupid metal triangles.

I wish the Honda z50 was the only like allowed on the road. We would all have smiles on our commutes.

Been thinking about this question, in it's presented context- what could Honda have done better at the time...

Dual Discs in front seem like a pretty logical progression, and I love them on my F2.  I think, though, that what the front end could really use before adding more brake is some stiffening and reinforcement.  A good fork brace, proper springs, and tapered steering bearings go a long way.  Ideally thicker fork tubes and a dampener would be utilized.

Then good swingarm bushings and better shocks-

Would have been nice if they hard plated the whole fork tube, and used better chrome throughout.  Maybe find a way to seal the fork ear from taking on water, or maybe better yet, find a better way to drain/vent it.

Overbuilt switches.  Would be nice if the stock ignition switches could handle hotter coils, and more powerful lighting.

Adjustable foot controls/sport control kit-

Factory design on the frame should be equivalent to Gordon's frame kit.

Better head studs/nuts/gaskets.  Oil leaks be damned.

More attention paid to engine finishing- better blending of intake tubes into head, better valve pockets, no shrouding.

More attention paid to inner clutch hub- should have the HM oiling mods done to it from the factory.

YMMV, of course.

Question is: is a closed chain box the same as an oilbath chain box?

Yes indeed.

Not it is NOT.  Dreams had enclosed chains, but with no oil bath.  Harleys big FLH for a while had a true oil bath enclosed chain.

That would have been the FLT I think,,funny frame..reversed trees, wierd wheels bearings, and swingarm bearings.. A ot of new strange parts.  New generation stuff at the time.. Like the FXRT.. Which whas a pretty good bike.p
Yeah the Honda fork tubes in hardchrome would have been nice. I bought, OEM 77/78 tubes to put in my chopper, wish i remembered what they cost..
Honda didnt need stiffer forks till the disc came into use....one improvement causes need for the next one..

I'm sure they had the ability in the seventies, So I think they should've made a factory aluminum tube frame. Would've saved some weight. And less rust issues.

It has to meet pricepoint. The Munch Mammoth had magnesium wheels.  Lots of bike could when the cost is 3x 1 what a Honda costs.
Just cuz something is commonplace today, does not mean it was feasible. 3decades ago..

Yea thats what I figured. Back then an alloy frame and swing arm would've tripled the price of a 750. Although today I'm sure it would be a valuable upgrade. Has anyone ever made one?

You can get them from FIAM (I think they are still out there?). And, they remove the PAINT from the car ahead of you: just be sure to not mount them inside your fairing, if you have one. :)

These sound like an 18-wheeler, and I almost wet my pants from laughing the first time my friend used them on his 500. The road cleared in front of him like Moses at the Red Sea.

Great thread. I liked the article on Honda, and the Harley nova. If Honda could have done the 750 any better i can think of two things:

1. Put a frame splice in the back bone for top end servicing. If they had they could have deleted the tappet adjuster ports because the whole valve cover could have come off easily. It seems this would have been a better "value engineering" decision?!?!

2. No damn bullet connectors, should have used moulded plastic connectors through out the harness. it would eliminate wiring mistakes for the most part.

The theme of this thread was one big reason to buy the CB750 back in the days.  Making it "better".
It was so much parts to to buy and use on the bike. You could transform it to a hot racer, cool cafe bike, chopper in various models and small updates as seat and handle bars only. The bike should have been boring without all aftermarket parts making the bike custom made. Every winter had a project, making the bike "better".

Now 30-40 years later we're turning it back to OEM. I have spent some $$$ to undo what I did to it during the early 80's. Almost OEM look but modified engine with 4-1. It will be wonderful to let people here hear how a CB750 with loud 4-1 sings ::) This is forgotten, like the sound from the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
The newer bikes with huge and very ugly car like exhaust system sounds soooo boring. No good looking slim 4-1 anymore....

The one improvement I would have loved the most for the 500 would have been changing the design of the frame and/or the air filter box plastic collector to allow it to be removed BEFORE the carbs! (and replaced AFTER refitting the carbs!)
