G'Day Dave, I'm guessing your mate's calibre of choice is 5.56mm? (.223)

I used to yack with a guy just like him in Colorado, he was a CB750 guy and gun nut (in a good way) and made his own custom riifles, but used a modified M16 to shoot Groundhogs for a couple of local farms and had a camo electric Golf Buggy that he used to drive around the farms to pot Ground Hogs. He could drop a Hog from several hundred yards away, and was very popular with the local farmers.

He got real sick a few years ago when he got sprayed by a crop duster whilst in his camo buggy, and I haven't heard from him in the last year or two, I know he had a pace maker put in, I hope he's still around? I can't remember how I met him online, probably via eBay I guess? Nice guy though, but a real "No Nonsense" type, he wouldn't even consider getting some sort of compensation from being sprayed? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Actually it is not an off the shelf round, he casts his own bullets as a result but he may use a .223 case.

Thanks Bobby, interestingly enough there are no military marks on it, except "US" on the butt plate, but the previous owner (who gave it to me as a "Thank You" for selling two of his Martini Henry's for him) told me that it'd been used in the American Civil War, so I think it's pretty cool. Cheers, Terry. ;D

The process of gunmaking may have advanced technologically, but the art of marrying metal and wood in a way it can be admired as a piece of art is gone.

He's probably using a stretched out 243 that is weighting around the 100gr marker. That custom barrel probably has a slower twist to keep that bullet stable. Thats the same thing I do. I have a custom Shilen 243 barrel and cook my bullets to 100gr (measuring each one). Then load up the cases to 36grn of powder. The velocity at the first 50yrds is 4200fps and it'll carry out to 1000 before it drops subsonic. Make no mistake...it's hella dangerous. The pressure is bordering on catastrophic and I have different loads for different temperatures. Hot days make the rounds more efficient increasing pressures. Cold days i have to add a grain or two to keep them consistent. I usually only get 1 or 2 firings out of the cases too. The other downside is that the barrel will not hold up. I have to rebarrel mine every 2000 rnds or roughly once a year.

I'm going to give up on the 243 hybrid above this next year and go to shooting 300wm for past 1000yrds. More consistent, safer, and you can wring out 1500yrds consistent with the right hand load. I have a 338lpm for going out past 1500. Inside of 600yrds I prefer a 223.
You CAN do great things...with enough beer.

Not ammo related but there were a few gun dealers on line that I can't find.

You can price a firearm then get prices in your area. Just can't remember the names.

Thanks.

I built a Flintlock replica. I fired it once. All the crap flying in your face and the delay. You had to be a real man to fire one. I guess I am a new old fart.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Can you send it to me Bobby? I'm so tough, I used to ride my bike with a cigarette in mah maff, so a face full of powder burns would be just like old times! ;D

Along the lines of previous posts re: firearms aesthetics, I was always disappointed to see modern weapons, for example an M-16, used at military funerals. At the very least they should be M-14's,  but better yet a well cared for bolt action 30-06.

As much as I love a good military funeral Bob, I did one for an old WW2 General in 1977, and the old baastard spent his last weeks alive planning his own funeral parade.

He died in an unseasonally cold November, and as we'd just gone into summer dress (light polyester dress uniform) 2500 soldiers slow-marched with arms reversed while it pissed down rain on us all.

That was the biggest funeral I've done, and probably the biggest waste of time too...... ;D

+1  The bolt action had a certain flair at Funerals. The bolts opening and closing in unison. It was more dignified. I hate Funerals anyway.

I think that everyone is just hoarding. If there wasn't any panic about the ammo... honestly, I think that we could all get 2-3 boxes each. Now a days it's nearly impossible. I can't even find my favorite $12 box of 9mm at Walmart...

Don’t be too disappointed ... The US Navy uses the M-14 for burial at sea funerals and the ‘03 Springfield at most shore funerals. M-16’s are rarely found in the ships armory as they lack the power to fire a grenade/flare launcher, shot lines, armor piercing rounds, etc. The M-14 was used at Neil Armstrong's burial at sea.

For funerals I'm partial to an Enfield and you're right the action being opened and closed adds to the moment Terry and Bobby I too hate funerals particularly military ones. Last one I was at was a young Flying Officer didn't survive the ground any how color party and armed escort after it was over the Padre having given his word we marched off in an orderly fashion and discovered  that no one had laid on beer for the airmen, balls, seems to me if you have to get dressed up and be military and listen to the BS you should at least get a suds. Tradition has it that you need a suds to toast the deceased by pouring on his grave.

I think Terry was generalizing. The tight bell bottom pants, being out in the Ocean for long periods of time cooped up with nothing but Men, the gang showers. It can give the wrong impression.

Ha ha, yep, just generalising, it's an Army thing, we just assume that the other two arms are all gay.

Of course, the Navy's motto, "We never leave our mates behind" doesn't help their case............ ;D

On a serious note though, my thoughts go out to the families of those people who were murdered by that psycho at the Naval Base in Washington today Sadly we'll be seeing more military funerals in the coming days...........  :(
