Cal, don't let them feel too much joy in escaping injury mate, there could easily have been a tree in his path that would have dramatically altered the outcome, luck is great, relying on it is dangerous... {as i'm sure he already knows}  ;)

I made that very point to both of them. I did want to instill in him that, there is never a single moment while riding or driving, that is free from concentration. A lack of it, will cost you or someone else dearly. Luck, as you've rightly pointed out, can not endure. Not even bad luck!

Been wicked busy and couldn't make time to repair the damage. Finally got around to remaking my gauge bracket (for the 4th time). Removed the push buttons and milled the top clamp, installed them in the "riser" holes instead. Cleans everything up a bit better.

And of course, had to straighten out the deep dent in the left side. Primered and ready to be re-painted.

I'll get around to paint in a few more weeks, but got too many other pressing issues first.

Cal,

Dropping the push-buttons for your Motogadget gauge into the top triple recesses was a stroke of brilliance.  A perfect union of form and function.

Just how many builds do you have going on right now??  ;)

Only 4. Fortunately, 3 are 550/500 so lots of time and effort saved as I "know my way around them" pretty good now. Getting to the point where economies of scale is taking over-

Biggest heartburn really is, my BMW. Every time I decide on a direction, I discover another bike out there (or 3) that's done something very similar. I haven't really spent a whole bunch of time looking at that section of the custom builds. Most I see are some type of tracker or X-purpose thing, so I thought I was alone in my pursuit.

And I be spent a lot time really looking closely at the builds from this guy- he's my hero!

"Only 4."  I guess there are some advantages (in economies of scale) in building 3 550/500s simultaeneously, but damn that's ambitious.

Hmm.  I really do like a Thruxton as much as the next guy (and probably more), but for me I'm not sure about the purpose of that particular "White Collar" bike.  It includes some extremely impressive machining and fabrication work (including the beautifully crafted, multiple wood seats), but the combination of a Diavel wheel and long swingarm promote straightline performance in comparison to the stock set-up.  The problem with that is that the stock Thruxton engine (no specs on engine modifications here) is not reknown for its performance in comparison to other 865cc engines (only 61 bhp/47 ft/lb).  To each, his own.  Maybe the WCB has an undisclosed monster engine.  Still, not my particular thing.  I'm not into stretched Busas either, but that's just one guy's taste.

In contrast, the South Bay Triumph Street Tracker catches my eye (and because of the paint):  http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/blogs/wild-file-bonnie-licious

I happended to to look at the White Collar FB page briefly and he has some other build categories there, including some decent trackers.

In my opinion, the stock Triumph is underpowered.  That was a definite advantage to the Ducati Sport Classic line (when it was produced).

I wish the stock Triumph peformed like the South Bay modded Bonne.

I know that not every bike has to be designed to go fast.  This bike shows off some truly beautiful machining and wood-working skills, more for an aesthetic goal than a performance goal.  That's a pretty BIG bike for Indonesia standards, too.

Man I know we've talked about clip ons versus clubman bars but I just love how they clean up that area. Your triple looks amazing. And, as I said before, love where you put the buttons. Tank looks good too. Nice work.

Tanks!  ;)

The tank did come up pretty good after some sweating and cussing. The primer is there because no matter what, the dent was so deep, that it need just a bit of mud to smooth out the metal. The paint I've used (really difficult to see from my phone pics and lighting) has a pearl under a semi-flat clear. So it shows every possible imperfection in the paint if you catch the light just right.

Spent a good while the other night contemplating a resolution to the "gap" I've had between the seat cowl and tank. That was the result of switching between 3 different tanks and 2 seats after having welded in the seat hoop. Even now, thought I might revert to the Benjies tank, but have opted against it. So in a few weeks, I'm going to modify the hoop, modify the cowl, then repaint the tank and seat. Then, I will be done with this bike. Just in time for winter  :-[

I took the bike out for a quick test ride, first since the "boo-boo" event. Thought it might be ready to start riding again with it's ugly face on. Nope. Got about 250 yards out of the driveway, and bonk! Was lucky enough to have a huge break in any traffic (I live on a rural road, 2 lanes, 55MPh speed, and no shoulder) and get it across the road, into a driveway. My other boy was along on his Suzi. After tinkering for a couple of minutes, I jumped on his, dashed home, truck and trailer and towed it home. What a drag, 250 yard tow...

Turns out, carbs 3/4 weren't getting any fuel. Ah, the older boy strikes again! After the tank work, I had asked him to flush the tank really well. Was getting debris into the fuel line. When I removed it from the petcock, it was dry as a bone, and so were the 3/4 carbs.

Think I've got all that cleared up, but I'll know later today after a test fire. If not, off the carbs come for a teardown and cleaning (again).  :-\

Clip-ons and clubmans: clip-ons definitely can create a great looking bike. But for an old man like me, they're not very comfortable. Plus, I've got some ortho damage to my left hand and wrist from a ports injury. Makes the pressure of that position pretty unbearable after a while. Nerve damage helps reduce the felt pain, but the joint starts howling like my wife after about 45 minutes of riding.

My clips are currently splayed a bit too wide forcing a long reach. But I also find that the wider position helps with some stability in the steering, so for my boys to ride this bike, I'm leaving it that way. At least until I get a stabilizer installed over the winter. Then, maybe I'll pull them in some.

The triple did clean up pretty well with a change in the bracket and the buttons just "worked" out through no fault of my own. Basically, I look at that as a lazy option, but a clever one, so thanks for the compliment. I'm going to use the same triple on the 572 build for my buddy, but in black, and I'll be using superbike bars on that ride. So I've solved the buttons and switch housings through different control units altogether. (I'm not really clever, I'm really lazy). Stay tuned on that thread for the pics.

To anyone that cares, or might be contemplating MotoGadget stuff, or electronic gauges in general: the M-Unit is unbelievably worth the money. Their gauge is down right pricey, but, this unit is an analog Tach with a small LCD screen that provides:
Electronic speed (magnetic sensor installed under clutch cover, reading magnet applied to sprocket bolt, thanks Devin for the great idea)
Electronic Tach
Voltage display
Odometer
Tripometer
Max RPM warning light
Max Speed retention
Oil PSI reading
Temp sensor input
And much more...

The backlighting is superb, neither too bright at night nor not bright enough to see clearly and quickly. The display is very legible and you can set it for 2 lines of info, or 3. I use 2 for simplification. You can even control how many "screens" you toggle thru (hence the left push button in my top clamp). Down right very usable, and very well made stuff.

Their wiring is extremely straightforward too. Two block connectors takes you anywhere you want to go (choose which functions you want, and wire them in).

I'll be using this system, their gauges, and their wireless key on all my builds henceforth. Way too easy and way too feature rich. Since I'm not doing restorations, and all these bikes needed full harness replacements anyway, it's just a win-win.

I read your post and smile because we all sound so much alike. I hope you don't mind I'm highlighting one part.

As you know I attempt to roadrace and am (for at least 20-30 minutes) in a tuck position with knees & elbows & wrists at angles that would kill me otherwise. Not comfortable nearing 60, but under the circumstances it doesn't bother me on the track. On the street though I'm like you and need to be smarter what I ride.

If you'll bear with me... I believe it might be from Jennings in the G-Express article about comfortable ergonomics. I built my wifes bike with this in mind. The pegs are directly under the riders (m)ass and low rise Euro flat bars (superbike bars) make for good angles and I could ride that bike all day. It uses a 750 Interceptor stepped seat which is great. Point being as we "mature" the most time spent should be on riding comfort otherwise the SOHC bikes get left behind in favour of the car or something more modern, completely unnecessary!  ;D

Absolutely agree B. In fact, the new "nakeds" use an even more attack posture where torso is upright, but feet are low and back ever so slightly. Makes steering effortless and tucks thighs in. With eyes, shoulders and head up, much better handling and riding (as you well know).

I'm adopting this very posture for my R90 and my buddies 572 build. SuperBike mids, and pegs only very slightly offset rear, under tail bone. Should prove to be very, very comfortable all day on street and nimble enough for side roads.

And we all benefit from your input with track experience transferring to the street. Thanks!

Sadly, I am getting into the same boat.  I absolutely LOVE riding my RC51 through twisty mountain roads.  Even with two herniated discs in my lower back, my back can handle the riding position, BUT my wrists get numb from all of the weight placed on them.  It's less of a problem while you are focused on more spirited riding but still an issue.

I don't mind my clipons on my 77 CB750 Cafe as I have them adjusted to a more flat position, as well as the adjustable clubmans on my CB550.  I also don't ride these bikes as hard as my RC51.  However, it's enough of a concern that I am seriously (90%) considering selling the RC51 to make way for a BMW S1000R naked bike.  The position with superbike bars is spot on to what Cal was describing.  I could probably ride that thing all day without the same concerns.

first glad your boy is ok, riding smart. 2) I too am using motogadget parts. very simple and it looks like it will be fun to wire up. 3) if that was a new bike I bet it would be in a lot worse shape, these old bikes are tuff.

great bike btw
