Engine won't start
« on: August 15, 2006, 09:18:26 AM »
I beg forgiveness in advance for asking about something other than a SOHC4, but I trust the posters on this forum.  You have all helped me out with problems with my '79 CB650, and the electrical system on my brother's 1983 CB900C should be quite close to our SOHC4 systems.   The bike was given to my brother after sitting under a tarp for 20 years or so.  He has done the usual - gone through the carbs (cleaned them with an ultrasonic parts cleaner), replaced needle/seat assemblys & all o-rings, gaskets, etc.  Checked valve clearances, cam timing, new plugs, checked plug wires, coils.  After a winter's work he took it out on the highway and rode it gently to see that it ran.  It did.  The bike then sat for two weeks while he ordered and installed tires and cleaned the bike up.  He removed the tank and seat, washed the bike down with solvent, then soap and water, then rinsed it off with clear water.  Blew everything dry with compressed air, replaced the tank and seat.  It now gives an occassional pop out of the muffler, but won't startl.  The coils check good, all grounds, wires have been checked.  There is spark at the plugs with them out of the engine and grounded, but a timing light won't pick up a signal from the wires.  Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be wrong.   Thanks everyone.

Kill switch.  Hmmmm.  I wonder if something is going on there.  Will check.  Battery is in bike, new, charged.  Fuel is on, plugs are wet.  Ah ha!  We'll open a float bowl drain and see how much fuel flows.  Thanks for the suggestions.

What kind of timing light do you use?
It sure sounds odd that the plugs fire off the bike,
but won't send a signal to your timing light.
Is the battery fully charged?
Does it have enough water in it?
Bikes parked out front mean good chicken-fried steak inside.

Very odd, indeed.  We need to try the light on a different engine and see if the light works.
