CB750: Throttle support on carb broke leaving a hole...
« on: September 09, 2013, 09:53:24 PM »
Wondering how big of a deal this is and how I can fix it? The little support piece that connects from the throttle to the carb broke broke and left a hole...

This is off a 1978 CB750. This bike apparently sat outside for a couple of years, I'm hoping the aluminum isn't getting soft or deteriorated.

Have you had a peek inside those puppies yet ? That will be where you will really see if they are going to live or die. As for that broken one sure the guys will give some suggestions, like maybe source a replacement.

They have some oxidation but are freed up and seem pretty good. I soaked and cleaned them really well.

Anyone else?

Aluminum gets harder as it ages.
I would spray those carbs with WD40 right away.
Use a soft brass tooth brush to get that corrosion off.

Strange that the carb next to it looks much better.

Don't throw that carb away. It can be repaired.

See that part of the casting that is threaded for the top cover screw?
I believe I fixed one of these by making a bracket that mounted on the top cover and just used a longer screw.

There are different ways to fix this problem.
Do not weld on this unless you are an expert at TIG welding and
it has to be spotlessly clean to weld. Warpage will be a real problem so that is why you have to really know what you are doing.
The inside has to be perfect too or the slide will not work correctly.

Thanks lucky. Is it a problem to keep it how it is? I don't know if the air hole is an issue or not?

Sprayed them down with some WD40 and they look really good now. Soaked that up and got rid of a lot of the surface oxidation.

I'll give that a try, thanks 754.
