New guy questions
« on: September 17, 2013, 11:06:22 AM »
Hi guys,

I picked up a basket case '77 CB750A a while ago and I'm finally getting around to getting it together. Rebuilt the carbs, bought new boots, built an exhaust, built out the frame, etc., etc., but I've got a couple of A-specific questions, as I've never owned, or even seen one, before.

The shift shafts...
There are 3 shafts coming out of the left side of the motor. Correct me if I'm wrong, but from back to front they are: kick starter (which I'll hopefully not need), shifter and kickstand neutral lockout thing? If that's correct, I have some follow-up questions.

What's the shift pattern? N at the bottom, then L and D above that?

I don't plan on running a traditional kickstand; what do I do with that forward-most shaft? I assume it's got two positions, engaged and disengaged, right? Rotate counter-clockwise, or clockwise and then leave it alone? I understand the bike needs to be in N when I start it, so I'll just remember to put it in N when I park it.

I think that's all for now...thanks for your help!

Pretty much all of your answers are found in the Owners/Service Manuals - available here for download.

Three shafts are:

Front -> Back

  • Neutral Return (connects to kickstand); gear shift; kick start.

Normal Shift Pattern:

Bottom -> Top

  • Neutral; Low; Drive

Neutral Return Shaft:

  • Rotated clockwise is the kickstand up position.

The Neutral Return Shaft can stay in the one position forever.  It is a safety feature.

The bike must be in Neutral (gear shift) to allow the bike to start.

Yeah, I clicked on the link to download the Owners/Service manuals and it brought me to wiring diagrams. Can you post a link?
