...just need to join the two parts now.
"Just"... I love it when people describe the work involved in TIG welding aluminum as "just". Coronary transplants take less time  ;D I know you were self-describing and know all too well what I mean, but it just looked completely under-stated in print  ;)

Beat me and everyone else to the loaded "just"!
If only it were that easy, aluminum race tanks would be bountiful!

Tank 99% done.

If I was doing it again I would put a larger radius on a couple of the corners.

Ah well, 4th tank actually, made one for a tz350a for a friend, and then one for my mates x5, that was why I wanted to make a better one for myself.

It's just aluminum. Cut it, bend it, weld it. Done  ;D

Don't underestimate your abilities, when I started this thread I had never bent a piece of aluminium, seen an english wheel, or even held a tig welder.  If I can do it, it can't be that difficult.

I like seeing "the little guy" do work like this. Of course a shop can do it, but seeing someone do it at home is really cool. Might be worth seeing if the local com college has a class. I mig all the time, have never tig welded.

Engine back in for exhaust fitting, got 4 metres of 32mm exhaust pipe today for £20.  Not sure whether to bend it, or pie cut and weld it?  Anybody got advice?

Sand is better than nothing, however I remember seeing it done using lead, and that really worked great. Want to guess how long ago that was?  ;D

Couldn't get my cone layout app on the phone to do what I wanted, so took a lucky guess using the inner and outer of a roll of masking tape.  Lucky guess!

Need a bit of tidying before welding on a belt sander, which I don't have, but I like the overall shape.

Yes, going to have to rig up something temporary to get it through the test for the road, won't matter if it runs like crap for that 5 minutes each year

Every time I see unbaffled megaphones like that, I think of Lord Moonpie's racing exhaust on "Doctor D" Dave Hiller's 750F and Vincent's CR for the street.  Doctor D's can wake up half of Seattle with his pipes on the dyno.

Bit more mocking up today, need to bring the lower ones (upper in pic) in a bit I think.  Definitely not going to interfere with the wheel spindle

Probably, this was just a mock up to see if they were any where close to being ok.  I'll be tweaking them further.
