First proper mock up tonight, think the home made tank is going to look ok.  ;D

Some progress on the tank.

Turned a wee bit of aluminium on the lathe to just under 25mm, and bored a 11.5mm hole in it for 1/4 bsp thread (should be 11.7mm but I didn't have a bit) which seems quite a common fuel tap fitting.  I then welded it into a piece of plate to be fitted to the tank.  I have it a bit lower than the base of the tank to make a sump.

I then tac welded the bottom into the tank.  I think it is going ok?

It is going to take a lot of tidying up, but I don't really care, I'll be really pleased if it works out.

Finished the tank today.  It weighs 2.7 kilos and holds 16 litres.  I found 3 pinholes in the welds using an airline and soapy water which were easy to fix.

Now onto the exhausts......

I'm waiting on a guy to get me some scrap sheet metal from his work place to make my exhausts.  I'm off work this week so was looking for some small jobs.  I thought I'd have a go at the rear frame hoop.  I had a poke around the shed and found a piece of suitable looking pipe.  Think I hit it lucky as it seems to be seamless 316 stainless with a very thick wall.

My father in law used to be a plumber so I got the keys for his shed and went digging.

I got lucky again as it had the 22mm former which is what I needed.  The radius was also pretty close to what I wanted, but Christ it was strong.

15 1/2 stone and a bit of bouncing, got it started and the wth the help of my testosterone filled teenage son we got it pulled round remarkably well.

We were so pleased with ourselves that we even put the wee upward kink in it too :-)

Might get a few glasses of brandy later, and take to the frame with the grinder.

Propped the loop in place, think I'll maybe shorten it another inch.

Just because the tank has boosted my confidence, I might try to make the seat unit out of aluminium, just to see how it turns out.

Rear frame hoop tacked in.

Had a practice at the exhausts, going for 32mm inlet and 60mm out x 500mm long.  My wee rollers wont do 500 so I'll have to make 8 cones for the 4 megaphones.

You get an app for everything these days!

Doing a mock up in a bit of .5mm tin

Turned out surprisingly well.

Will have to try it in slightly heavier metal now.

Made a good contact with a nearby engineering workshop.  Got this 1.2mm stainless steel for £20

Managed to roll and tack my first 4 megaphone sections, my cheapo rollers are only supposed to do 1mm mild steel, so the stainless pushed them to the limit.

4 more to go to get down to 32 mm.

Cut, rolled and tacked another 4 cones tonight.  These ones go from 46mm down to 32mm and are 125mm long.

The bigger ones are 60mm-46mm x 250mm.

Originally I intended them to be 500mm total, but after rolling the bigger ones I didn't think I could roll 250mm any tighter, so went for 125mm which gives me a total of 375mm.  The shorter ones aren't as noticeable as I thought they would be.

Got the 8 cones welded together last night, the ends are a bit out of shape from the heat, which is a problem with stainless apparently as it is very bad at conducting heat away from the weld, but they should hammer back ok.  I couldn't resist yet another mock-up, let me know if this is getting boring?  Looks like mounting them to the footrest hanger is the easy option?  (Excuse the temporary bmx foot pegs!)

It will be going to the Isle of Man, hopefully next August, but it is just another race replica I'm afraid.  I think I have clocked up most of the views of this youtube video, it is my inspiration ;-)

Bit of progress on the seat unit, not sure if I can be bothered trying to hide a wee battery and wires in it.

Ordered the £75 600cc kit off fleabay.  I'll let the local engine tuning workshop have a look at it to see what they think.  Research on the interweb would indicate that the most common advice is to buy oem circlips, and match each piston to an individual cylinder.

Day off work, so hammered a bit of shape into a piece of aluminium for the seat.

Seems ok for a first attempt, will tack it on tonight and seam weld it at my welding class on Tuesday night. (Might as well use their argon)

600cc chinese piston kit and head gasket arrived this morning too, looks fine, and delivered half way round the world in 96 hrs!

Haven't got anything done recently due to the festivities.

Got a couple of hours in the garage tonight to start the front fairing bracket.

Thought I'd tig them on rather than messing about with wee rivets.  Bit of a welding reaction due to the coating on the brackets, but turned out ok.

Had the cutting disc in action tonight, a surprising amount of rust fell out of the passenger hanger brackets.

The next plan is to get the wire brush going, tidy the visible welds, and add the usual bracing.
