Can you post a photo of where you plan to attach your aluminum mounts to the frame?  They look pretty robust.  Any particular reason to form them at a 90 degree angle?

I saw that the passenger footrest mounts are at 90 degrees, and it was also the easiest angle for me to replicate accurately.

Mounting to the frame will just be welded on lugs.

Bolted brackets to welded on lugs, right? Or have you figured out how to weld aluminium to steel while we weren't looking? ::)

There you go!  Cal does raise a good question regarding the dissimilar metals.  Why not use the stock tubes or a steel bracket?

Aren't all rear sets bolted on?

Yes, I just intend boring some holes in steel, plate which will be welded to the frame, and the aluminium then bolted to it.

The passenger pegs would have done the job ok, but I just fancied making them from aluminium.

I agree, much better to make them. Was just busting your chops a wee bit, since you hadn't declared your intentions of the bolt-to steel tabs.

Have you ridden round for long with your feet on the rear pegs...?  Not very comfortable at all....

You are right, I will be going a little less extreme than the passenger pegs.  Considering trying to have some adjustment in the plates, if I can work out the hole geometry, gear linkage, brake cable mounting etc.

I agree with RR on this. Just for some perspective here is the rear set placement on my racebike. Maybe I'm not so flexible anymore but these are not comfortable for very long!  ;D

Here's the approach I took.
9 way adjustable plates bolted to the frame via engine & swingarm bolts.
Rear-sets can then be bolted acordingly.

Been busy doing other stuff, (including a week on the Isle of Man with my BSA) but finally got a bit of time on work on the rear sets, just going slowly using hand tools.  Lots more metal to remove, but i like the holes.

Haven't got much done recently, working on other bikes, but mounted one of the foot rest hangers tonight.  I can remove more metal from the bracket and hangers if they look a bit too heavy duty.  Not really liking them at the minute, but I'll see how they fit in as the  build continues.

The brackets look a little clunky, but will likely do the job.

Got a little bit of inspiration today when I scored a cb650 cam off US ebay.  My budget is a bit tight but I can justify the rebore now for the Chinese pistons, and will keep saving for the cr29s and ignition goodies.

Advice from this site would be to leave the bottom end alone if it doesn't need touched, but I have a question, what is the best way to clean up the cases for painting if you are not doing a strip down?  I presume it is better to do the cleaning before taking the head and barrels off to keep the crap out of the bottom end?

That is horrible, cracked silver paint.

The chain guard was broken, but I was able to fix it with the tig.  You just need to remember to hold your breath when welding galvanised ;-)

It's funny.  CB650 cams are getting scarce on ebay, but you can still buy an entire 650 or 650 parts bike relatively cheaply and part it out if necessary.  I'd rather not sacrifice an entire bike for a cam, so I just took the whole stinking cb650 motor to drop into my 550 frame and I'm keeping the titled fugly '82 frame in case I want if for something down the road.

Finally started into the engine.  What I thought was a clean bike, has had previous surgery.  Several stripped threads so far, and many odd fasteners.

Had enough for tonight, bit apprehensive about what lies ahead.  The bike was only showing 20k miles, so not sure why someone had the head off already.

The head would not come off the barrels due to the front centre bolt, which seems exposed to all the elements, and had seized.  It sheared off, but they would still not come apart, so I had to cut it with a dremmel, and then try to get the two halves of the bolt out.

This did not go well.  Ended up drilling it out, and making a big enough hole to fill with the tig.  Alloy soaked in oil for 40 years does not weld nicely!  Anyhow, I hopefully got enough new metal in there to take a thread insert.

I don't see this bolt as being critical anyway as it seems to be a bit crappy that it tightens onto the fins?

Can someone confirm these bolts are metric fine before I start re-threading thanks?

Left the barrels in for the cruzinimage rebore, and they asked me about piston clearance.  Research shows 0.002" let me know if this is wrong, as they won't do the work until next week.
