Hello everyone, here is some quick info on my build.

I bought my back back June and rode all of June/July/August. mostly stock minus a couple of minor updates( new chain, tires, misc stuff.). Then i bent a couple of intake valves when it over revved. I had been planning on doing a full rebuild and engine rebuild since I had a bad second gear and had oil leaks here and there.  Lots of pics to come. As i have been working on the build for a month but just now getting to posting on here.

I have spent the better part of the last month reading up the forum so many thanks to everyone that has posted on here as your posts are motivational to keep pushing myself to keep learning. its also been great to get ideas and inspiration. My build is a mix of ideas between my own and a couple of others (Tews, rustyolive, industrialcafe, speedbump(dtt) ).

Looking forward to learning, enough chatter now on to the good stuff.

Dropped the engine off at the machine shop. Getting a full head job(valve guides,valves,springs, retainers), and will be getting the crank, rods, pistons on the mic to get the sizes for new main bearings etc etc.  Will also be installing a new tranny.

in the mean time i started buying parts for the build.

Bought the 2005-2006 GSXR 1000 front end (forks, upper tree, clip ons, controls, wheel/tire, rotors/ calipers, fender) $190! steal of the century.??

Then bough a lower tree and steering dampener, new tail light, seat, 550 swing arm, harley hub/complete front wheel to go with the conversion. all balls bearings came in as well.

I like these builds. I have a question:

What is exactly needed or used to do a GSXR front end swap?

Im about to pick up a CB550 frame with some odds and ends. I want to do a similar hybrid build. I was thinking of doing a CBR600 front end, but I am finding more of us going with a front end of the newer GSXR.

I havn't bought a front end yet. I pick up the build bike this Sunday.

From what ive read, the lower tree stems should fit with minimal issues, the all balls taper bearings come with the spacers you need. The other issue is deciding what type of wheel you want to use. You can use regular sport bike 3 spoke wheels for a direct bolt on or you can use a 1" harley narrow glide hub laced to your wheel. Those hubs are hard to come by and you will need spacers machined and possibly new rotors depending on the front end that you buy. It really isnt that difficult, the hardest part is finding the parts at a good price. just my 2 cents. Look up rusty olive, tews, industrial cage or speedbumps builds and they have at on of great info and are always willing to help

Check the All Balls fork swapping application for reference.  I believe that both the GSXR and CBR600RR directly swap into the CB550K with no need for a modification or transplant of the triple clamp steering stem.

Yea, I have already looked into Rusty Olive and even had PM with him back and forth. It just looks like the 2006 GSXR may be a Less expensive route with less machining = $$$$$

Im not in a rush on this 550 build, due to having a 750 I can ride right now.

I find the same info as you have. But the CBR600 transplant looks like custom machine work front axle and rotor adapters, Since I want to use a hub with the classic spoke set up. I think that just looks so sexy.

  Looking at the pic of the cyld head, looks like either #1 or #4 was running hot, the other 3 cylds look normal. Likely a lean condition, possible from air leak (o-rings, intake boots), carb issues(plugged jets, float level etc), jetting or sync. Once you get the engine rebuilt and running I'm sure you will figure it out.

Larry- I originally didnt like the way it was looking because the tank is a bit wider than the base of the seat but once i put it on the frame it changed my mind.

Im waiting for my shocks to come in, I will post some pics of it when i start putting it all back together again. As of now shes sits on a bare frame. I chopped up the rear end just a bit so that the bars dont exten beyond the seat

Hear back from the machine shop today. Crank, main bearings, rods, journals, pistons and cylinders all mic'ed ed well. Just gonna do a quick hone and a full head job since several intake valves were bent, valve guides went with them as well and new springs since some of them broke during the removal process.

Every post ive read about building (from what i can recall) and engine suggests replacing the primary chain and tensioner but they dont say why. What the reasoning behind replacing them beside age?
