Popcorn thread
« on: September 12, 2013, 04:44:15 PM »
Yes, I like popcorn.  And, I like the convenience of the microwave variety.  My new microwave even has a popcorn button.  Sure was handy.  First push selected 3.5 oz and second push gave 3.0 oz.  Nice.
But, now I can't find popcorn in 3.5 oz or 3.0 bags.  WTF!  3.2 oz is the max I can find.  Some 2.9 oz, but most are 2.6 oz or less.  Phooey!

So I went brand shopping. And each and every one has reduced the bag weight.  Did they all decide to give themselves a raise at the same time?  Something's fishy there.

I think I'll experiment with the brown paper bag method and adjust the volume of raw popcorn to make the 3.5oz popcorn button work again.

Any of you know sources for 3.5oz microwave bags?  I'm going to boycott the local stores regarding popcorn offerings, in any case.

OK.  Use olive oil, canola oil, vegetable oil, peanut oil, margarine, butter, lard, or what?

Really hoped to find the microwave 3.5 oz bags, though.

Oil? Real butter is. The. Best. My wifey buys that spray " can't believe snot butter" . No bueno. Real butter.
I do prefer sunflower oil when making hummus though.

I will also confess to being a glutton around the holidays when those popcorn twins start coming out. Usually 3 compartments. Cheese, Carmel and butter.

If baking is a science and cooking is an art...what the heck is microwave cooking?

TT....you like kettle corn?

Sure, as well as caramel corn.  But, I now prefer buttered popcorn.  Gotta have low salt because of High BP, low sugar to keep weight down.  The air popped stuff seem pointless to eat.

or a butter thread in a margarine thread?

Well there is truth in labeling.  Unbelieveable butter...made with canola oil.  The manufacturers are saying, "We told you so!"

Really, you guys don't have trouble finding 3.5 oz microwave bag popcorn?  Is this yet another California thing?

I found a source on line for 3.5 oz. bags.  $15 for 48 bags "movie theater buttered popcorn".  So, I went for two orders.  $30.  Oh boy!  During check out I found out it was going to cost $38 to ship from Iowa to California.  WTF!

The homeland had microwave popcorn as one of the things you can buy to get a nickel off gas so  I stocked up an unreasonable amount of kettle corn and got 20 gallons of gas for $10. Needless to say I still have plenty.

If you never tried soy sauce on it , check it out. Once you get past a drip of soggy on it  tastes really good.

Coconut oil to pop in, then use a little spray bottle with soy sauce and sprinkle brewers yeast on.

OK.  Use olive oil, canola oil, vegetable oil, peanut oil, margarine, butter, lard, or what?

[/quote]

Olive oil has a very low flash point so you cant use that.  the others will work.

Really?

I've seen many recipes for popping corn in the microwave using olive oil.  Here is one of them.

I've used olive oil and it works fine, peanut oil makes the house smell like peanut butter, but then it still tastes like popcorn. Senses; confused.
