Speedhut gauges! Pictures, questions, comments
« on: September 13, 2013, 05:01:34 pm »
So I finally decided on a gauge. I went with a speedhut dual gps gauge. It has both speedo and tach in one unit so it cleans up my dash pretty well. Luckily I also found out it snaps perfectly in to the original housing with the ring installed. Soon I hope to either build or get built a bracket to fit it center but for now it's perfect.

I do have question, since it's an electronic rpm gauge I have to set it using a spark/rev count. Im wondering if anybody more knowledgable then I would be able to give me a proper setting. My choices are .5,1, 1.5, 2.5, 3, 4, and 5. I have it spliced into my 2/3 signal line (yellow) off the points.

Oh wow can you post more images of the cluster i have to redo mine as well because PO cut the little frame that the tach/speedo sit on. I was thinking of trying to get one that replaces both. Sorry I can't help with more information though. :(

Nice, I got one too but havent wired it yet.

I would think it would be set to 2. isnt there a 2 option? can always try it and if the rev is saying half, then its 1 :) but being a 4 stroke, it would spark on compression, then you have an exhaust rotation, then another spark on compression.  ....right?

Wiring it was a breeze, just tied into the black n green in the head bucket and tied all the + lines together 1 - out.. Wired in an accessories fuse box and tied in the hot start.

What model bike is this on? I know I saw a project thread a while back of someone using an electronic guage. I want to say it was Scott S's 500/650 cafe but I might be wrong. A search would probably turn it up.

Shoot, I had mine wired to my 550 with the stock ignition for a few weeks before going to an electronic ignition.  I thought the instructions were pretty self-explanatory for a two-coil points setup.  Ill dig around for my instructions tomorrow and see if I can remember how I had it setup.  Worked perfect off the yellow points wire.

This is on a 750k2. I spliced it into the yellow as well. I played with a few setting but none seem that on. 1 rev/signal seems closest but i feel like its rev the hell out of it but the gauge is only reading out 4-5k....

I know they red line at 8 and admittedly I've never gotten to rev/see a sound rev correlation for these motors.

Under Step 3, Type #2 I am almost sure the 1 pulse/rev worked for me, but cannot guarantee that..  Best bet is to try out different settings, can't hurt anything!  Do you still have the stock one you can leave hooked up to cross reference?  That's how I verified mine was right.

My 76' cb750 is at about 3900-4k at 60. 62 might be exactly 4k. That is with stock gearing. From what I've read I believe the earlier years ran different gearing but between both sprockets I think the end result would still give you a similar rpm to mph. That should still at least give you a starting point to be close.

The speedhut units need to be set to one pulse per revolution, I have had a set on my 650 for quite some time now, there is a link in my signature to how I fitted them. ;D

In 5th I'm assuming? Any other numbers do I can check a few ranges?

I believe yours is the one I saw that made me try the method I did. At which point in the electrical did you connect for a tach reading?

I connected into the yellow wire to the coil, but you could use the blue.  I connected in about 3" from the coil.  If it is set to 1 pulse per revolution it will be correct ;D.

Yes this is in 5th gear. I've used this site in the past lots of good info for gearing and tons of bike info already loaded. Just enter Honda CB 750 70-78'

It also lets you change out sprockets so you can see how it effects rpms at speed.

They do a sale like 3 times a year to get 15-20% off. I waited about 2 months for this :) black friday, "march madness" etc.

Not that I know of. I've seen a few place selling them but you won't get to customize them. Idk if you've checked out their site but whats cool is you get to choose all the colors number styles add graphics etc if you choose too. I was also able to request the revs show up to 10k rather then 8.

Ya I did the same. They should advertise that capability.

Did you make that bracket or have it made?

Also they occasionally run specials, labor day weekend they had a 15% off thing running
