Question about turn signal switch
« on: October 23, 2013, 02:44:49 PM »
Hello everyone.

So I replaced my flasher yesterday, and it's working well, except for the fact that on the left hand switch, if I go full left or full right (where it locks into place), it doesn't flash but stays on. However if I do a partial switch left or right (where it will spring back to off) it does flash.

Is this normal operation or is there something wrong with the switch? I know I already have to take apart the switch because the low side of the headlight works intermittently, but that's a separate issue.

Thanks
Marshall

Check the small brass teeth (there are 2) that sandwich between the slider inside of the switch. Was it working properly before you changed the flasher? Make sure they are aligned and also check the wires that solder to the small fiber circuit board. Make sure they are still attached and that none of your wires are grounding against metal.

as sprocket mentioned, the switch and internal components need to be cleaned.  this was common on my K8 switch.
be sure the contacts are free of contaminants, and coat with some dielectric grease.
should be fine.

Great-- I haven't opened the switch up yet, so I'll make sure to clean and grease them, as well as check solder joints.
I had to get the bike inspected today, so I worked on the flasher last night since it wasn't flashing at all. Now that I know it's at least flashing I can really clean up that switch.

Thanks so much

Once you clean up the contacts of that slider you won't have that sweet spot anymore. Carefully clean it don't hit it with sandpaper to kill the corrosion. I use the dielectric pretty sparingly there

Do you guys know how many steel balls go in that switch? I can only see where 1 would go, but I got 2 extra mystery ones... ???

There are 2 steel balls. One in the front part that is black nylon (the larger ball bearing) and one that is VERY small that sinks into a hole that has a spring in it on the white nylon slider. (this is the piece that houses the brass teeth) The tiny bearing seems to have a mind of its own and will jump out of that socket with the speed of a cheetah. Be sure to have a box or big piece of white poster board to catch it when it falls out... oh, yes, it will fall out. Take your time. This is not an area where you want to be impatient.

Thanks Mr. Flybox 8)

P.S. In case a switch is un-fixable, I thought I saw new aftermarket switch assys. available at PartsNmore. About 70.00 USD each, left or right sides, IIRC. They're listed in the 550k section, as "bar switch assys. for '74-'75. I think the 750k3-5 take the same part.
