Rattle, Rattle
« on: September 14, 2013, 06:22:07 AM »
We noticed a bit of a primary chain rattle during the warm up at our last meeting.
Ran the whole meeting without any issues.
This is what we found when we dropped the sump.

Cheers,
Brian

Damn, Honda makes a tough motor. Chews up the primary chain tensioner, spits it out, and keeps on racing!  8)

Hi Brian, didnt you know thats why the government have speed limits on our roads, so we dont blow our motors up  ::) ::) ;D ;D   poor old girl, maybe its time to register her for the road and look after her,  after all she is in her senior years ( not even mentioning the rider)

Its interesting as I was reading a yarn from Mark Magraw M3 about the journey he went through with primary chains while he was racing , all fixed with good chains and innovative tensioners BUT  its easy to take for granted the extreme pressure on those items, probably the most stressed part in the engine. Then bear comes along puts another wheel on , takes his mate along for the ride and fangs the guts out of it. The poor old girl is living on the edge.

I reckon your getting a bit of that luck back from the old days bear ;)

Yep we run a std Bol D'or tensioner and this is not the first one we have chewed up, but it is the first we've actually snapped in half.
They are no longer available through Honda anymore.
Vince and Hyde make a manual tensioner for competition use only, at $400 a pop. It looks like we will have to go down that route.

Cheers,
Brian

Thanks Johno I'll give Cyclex a look and see what they've got.
Can you give me a lead on the ZE chains?

Classic cycle city in Germany and the States are the ones that had these chains made, look for forum members Ricky racer {Ted, USA} and Nippon {Thomas Germany} both guys can hook you up... I think they are the ones supplying cycle X   ;)

I don't think I'm qualified to say Greg.
It's been a long time since I have used a SOHC crank. :)

Our A motor is about to go together hopefully in time for the Ozzy Titles in Perth during November.
We are taking a bit of a change in direction this time around.
I've never been one to chase high RPM's with our motors.
Relying on the bigger torque figures we get using the DOHC cranks instead.
This time around we are going to try a slightly different tack and will use the lightest crank yet @ 9.5KG.
We will sacrifice some torque for a motor that will hopefully spine up a bit quicker.
