Lined up things as they need to be, then torqued down the towers to 80 in-lbs, and the sprocket bolts to 90 in-lbs. Looked at the time and realized its been 12 hours straight at this starting here

Frank/754 sold me his. Despite my sincerest efforts, I couldn't get him to sell me a NOS oil pump :( (He has plans on using it with his 1000cc build). But thank goodness to Elan's super kits and some near new goodies from members here, the engine is ALMOST a NOSSER ;D ;D ;D

NOS oil pump is truly unobtainium.
I have the nearest thing to a NOS pump in one I bot from Ebay with 7500 miles on it. Just popped the sides on it to do a Elan rebuild, and the rotors are nice and pristine.  Why the rebuild you ask? Even with the low mileage it would wet sump the oil out of the tank into the crankcases in a matter of days. So even Frank's may need to be opened up and the rubber bits refreshed.

I think I'd install it first and see though.   :D

Only New is truly New. Like the Cycle X one.

Yeah, but that Cycle X one is PRICEY!!! Granted, if you are running a competition motor and you have huge sums of money wrapped up in your engine, you don't want your oil pump to fail and cause a catastrophic failure.

I was planning to rebuild it anyway had I managed to acquire it. Mostly wanted the untouched impellers and end caps. Came pretty close to it, found a set of impellers and end caps from member Godffrey here with super low miles and almost no wear on them. Have a pump with even fewer miles and better impellers saved for the K3, thanks to Bill Benton 8) 8)

Nice scores. I do think we are all suffering from some misplaced paranoia. Other than the rubber bits, the rotors can get scratchy, but doesn't affect performance. And I've never heard of one failing. Under any circumstance. (Hmm I wonder what RC used?)

Question:

I forgot two things when putting the cases back together. The carb overflow tube guide and the electrical wire routing guide under the counter sprocket cover. Is there any danger in undoing and re-torquing just those two bolts? One's a 6 and the other's an 8 mm.

Phew! That's a relief, thanks Bill! On deck for tomorrow. Had a couple hours today so rebuilt the starter. Wanted to get it out of the way and installed so I can get to installing the cam chain tensioner cover. Had a NOS rebuild kit, but its missing a few things that the parts fiche doesn't show. Can't be bothered with it for now, gotta get on the road so moved along. Cleaned up the contact surface with 1200 grit and a push pin to clear the ridges. Case ends and coils cleaned out with CRC quick dry electronics cleaner.

All new brushes, the spec on these is 5mm and the old ones look pretty close to getting there. Trusty mineral based oil to lube up the shaft, new case o-ring seals.

There was a tiny tear in the sleeving towards the motor end where there was a sharp bend. Used flexible electrical tape on that spot, then slipped over a new sleeve, just the perfect amount was left over from when I rebuilt the controls.

Used a flap wheel to spruce up the terminal, then slipped on a NOS boot.

Final o-ring will be installed when I'm ready to drop it in its place.

Not a whole lot got done but plugging away as I make time. Got the missing bits installed on the crankcases following Bill's advice. Also, just another shot of the NOS cam, love how cool this thing is!

Rockers installed, all new tappets and nuts, the old ones weren't bad, but I want a fresh start with the all new everything JMR head. Almost forgot the cam end bolt, thank goodness I rememberd  ;D

Installed the starter motor with new bolts. Was about to install the cam chain tensioner then stopped because I'm waiting on the oil pressure switch boot and wire to arrive. Really pissed off at this because I thought the alternator sub harness from yamiya included the oil pressure switch wire, but it doesn't. Has anyone tried installing the starter motor cover AFTER installing the cam chain tensioner? Or will it just plain not work? I want to get the tappet clearances set while the motor is still on the bench  :-\ :-\

It's a very slight wiggle to get the starter cover on underneath the cam chain tensioner.

Thanks guys! I'll get back to that soon. Was hoping to install all the covers today and realized I'm also waiting on the shifter assembly spring (located a NOS one) so decided to take a break from the engine today. Thought about getting the forks and rear shocks back together so it will be an immediate roller once the engine goes in (wheels are ready).

Bummer though, major set back right at step one with the front forks. Only got as far as installing new drain bolts and washers. Had my fork tubes rechromed, BIG MISTAKE. Plated too thick, nothing will slide over. In my haste, I tried to force a piece and the plating started to scratch up :-[ :-[

Z1 parts has excellent hard chromed tubes, ordering them now, but I desperately need the circlips, band and the piston at the bottom of the tubes. Paged Bill, hopefully him or anyone reading has some for me :(
