Squirley's CB750 Cafe Project

Hey guys, its been a while since I have been a contributor to this board.  So long in fact that it somehow convinced me to start another project.....yeah.......
Since I have enough bikes already haha, I am building this up for my brother who has been asking me to build him a bike for a while now.  Project timeline is unknown, but for those who have followed my builds in the past know not to hold their breath...
I just finished up my last project a few months ago so I picked up a frame and motor for this next project.  This beauty is a 1976 super sport.  Plans are to keep the classic racer lines with a modern front end.  It will bear several similarities with the 550 I built a few years ago.

So not much to report yet as I have been detabbing the frame and trying to get the new rear section laid out...here's the progress

Welded in some corner braces


The rear shock mounts are 1/2" solid pucks, not my first choice but the positioning of these upper shock mounts always proves to be a royal pain when building a new rear section

hey squirley, that 550 was a lovely build. Any idea what the effect on front end rake and trail geometry was with those long rear shocks... been getting a bit of stick myself and warned of tank slappers and a twithchy rear end due to putting 14 and a half inch rear shocks on my 500

Ewan,
The longer shocks to a point had a beneficial effect on the handling.  I never gave it a chance to experience any tank slappers as I fitted a steering stabilizer almost immediately and I would suggest you do the same if increasing your rear shock length (although may not be necessary).  To be honest, if you have the shocks on hand, slap them on and see how they handle...

Jojo,
You are going to want to seal off the end of the tubes so water and grime cannot enter the frame.  I have yet to close mine off as I will be adding a wrap around tube to follow the seat contour.

I am trying to figure out where to mount the oil tank.  Has anyone made a low profile, rectangular box that fits below the carbs?  Does anyone see a problem with this location?

Don't think I've seen a oil box there... Have however seen one or two built into the swing arm. Come to think of it... Might have been WrenchMonkeys that did it.

So as usual, had just a few hours to work on the bike this week...My apologies for the boring update haha.

Milled up some rear set brackets


Plugged the frame hoes where the original upright connected, and got the brackets aligned and tacked on


Then fully welded them up

Squirley, if you wouldn't mind also possibly making the upper mounts you made for the upper shocks?

Or if you could measure your bottom brackets for the rear sets I know I can get them made up from a family member... Shoot, even if you could trace and send via email/postal that would be great. I would compensate you monetarily!

There are photos of the original Bimota HB-1 (sohc 750) which had an oil tank in front of the crankcase, surrounding the oil filter. Later photos of the HB-1 had the oil tank back in a more conventional place.
