cb550f cylinder 1 question
« on: September 16, 2013, 08:52:55 AM »
Hello everyone.  I'll start by saying that I've been doing some research around the forum this morning and still could use some help.  Rode my bike around all day on thursday, and it was running like a top (as usual).  Went to fire it up this morning to head to work and it wanted to stall after starting (choke on full with some throttle).  Usually I barely even have to touch the starter button and BAM, she fires right up.  Tried again and with some extra love she turned over.  As I slowly released the choke (like I usually do.. though it still requires a little throttle until warm) the bike sounded somewhat gurgley and still wanted to stall out.  I figured in my rush off to work mentality that since the weather has cooled down significantly, there's been some rain, and I hadn't been on the bike all weekend it was just having a rough morning and would smooth out as she warmed up.

So I rode to work (only about 2 miles) and could tell she wasn't getting any better.  Parked in the garage near work.  When I touched the pipe out of cylinder 1, it was warm, but not hot.  Touched the pipe on cylinder 2 and pretty much instantly melted my fingertips.  3 and 4 were hot as well.

I don't have my spark plug spanner with me so I wasn't able to pull the plug on cylinder 1 and check for fouling.  But like I said, it was running GREAT on my last ride with no issues whatsoever.  I'm gonna pull the plug when I get home, but if it's not fouled up, what would that indicate?

Any tips or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.  Nervous to get off work later and have to ride home, but we'll see what happens when I start her up again.

Pull the plug and clean it, swap it with #2 and see if the problem re-occurs. If it does is it still cylinder #1 or has it moved to #2?

'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Having the SAME exact issue with my '75  550 except cylinder #3. (see my post)  Mine starts easily and runs smooth (even idles great) but that #3 is barely warm. Will do a compression test tonight and then check the carb for that cylinder. Spark is good. Let me know what you find and I will do the same...two heads are better than one!

Definitely!

Kinda what I was thinking...  Thanks guys.  Since I wasn't able to pull the plug and take a look, its kinda hard to say, but it ran so well the last time I fired it up... I;'m actually worried the plug will be clean...

Haha.  Came home for lunch and pulled the plug in cylinder 1.  Totally fouled.  All the plugs are a bit rich (dark), but that one was pretty gunky.  It was actually a relief to see that.  Cleaned it up and the bike ran great.  Gonna keep that spark plug spanner and a tooth brush in my backpack until I can take a look into the carb(s).  Good luck with yours Sprocket!

Glad it worked out for you! I seem to have gotten mine running as well...it was the air screw on cylinder #3. (see my other post) She still runs rough though, but I believe it is the timing. I still plan to pull the carbs anyway as they need to be cleaned properly and then adjusted. I am on the fence about ordering the carb sync gauge set from "the bay", but I guess I will bite the bullet and do it. Around $100 with shipping.

HT leads and sparkplugcaps can give problems when wet like in rain. Check and clean.
