In the market for Bars
« on: August 16, 2006, 07:50:32 AM »
Well as the subject states, I'm looking for bars. I've settled on 2 types I think but I need help. I am looking for either clip-ons that are long enough for all the controls w/o much modification or Drag bars.

Question on the drag bars though. I've seen pictures on bike of the ones that are pretty much just straight. But as I have been searching I've seeone with either rise or pull back. Well, cycle -re-cycle say pulback and cycle-x says rise. So, which one is it?

And does any one have pictures of them on their bike?

I've seen the Drag bars on cbjunkie's. Do those have the rise/pullbak in them or are they just straight across. It's hard to tell in the picture.

Bars that are straight across would be pretty uncomfortable IMO.  If I was going to go that route I would just go buy a piece of tubing rather than paying the handle bar price though.

Most drag bars have pull back I.e. the bars are bent back slightly towards the rider so your wrists are at a more comfortable angle.  Drag bars don't have rise as that refers to the amount the bars 'rise' up from the handle bar clamps which drag bars do not.  Adding a bit of rise to a set of drag bars gives you a super bike style bar.

Mine is a drag bar with a slight pulback. 2.5 inch or something. Cant recall.

Love the dragbar. I really like the look of the clubman/clip-on but I'm 33 and in reasonably good shape and I feel some back stress with the dragbars after about 20 minutes or so. I can't imagine what lower bars would do.

To each his own but IMHO dragbars give you the best comprimise. You don't get the extreme back/wrist aches, and you get to lose that dorky riding position of the stock bars.

Read up in old threads theres ALOT of chatter on this topic.

"and you get to lose that dorky riding position of the stock bars".

Not trying to get under anyone's skin, but some of us that have ridden since the early 70's happen to like the stock riding position and like to think of it as classic.

another bar you could consider is called a G.P. touring, it has a pullback like the drag bar, and about a 2-3" dorky rise.

My bike with the old "superbike" bars, which had a 3'' rise...

My bike with my $30 Ebay clip-ons (much better)
I put them ABOVE the top tree to help wiht my bad back, unlike most
that put them under the top tree..

It has worked out great for me and my back.
Gave me an aggressive look (with the low bars), but still keeps my back at a comfortable angle.
Pardon the clutter, as I plan to do a cleaning of this over the winter...

MR DORK (I mean Breeze) checkin' in....who cares what you look like in your riding stance? Go for comfort. I had clip-ons on my 74' 900Z with rear sets.I was in my young 20's and although it didn't hurt my back...it was #$%*ty to ride more than a couple of hours in that position so I traded my parts for stock and ended up enjoying it more. And I also don't recall anyone calling me a dork for it (at least to my face!!....hmmmmmm!!!)

yeah - gasguzlr has it right - the drag bars are just slightly angled back towards you - i do not believe they were ever intended to be mounted with "rise" - only with "pullback" i.e. flat horizontal, parallel to the ground, with the bend angled back.

tilting them up would do odd things to your wrists...at one point this winter i had them pointing down, or down and back, i liked that okay and it was actually comfortable also since your wrists want to roll over just a little bit - right now mine are mounted horizontal, though.

i have a chrome set - 20 plus shipping. never mounted.

i have a set of GS650 bars, only about and inch rise, and a very slight pull back, you still have to lean a little forward to get to them, i am about 6'1 so that might give you an indication...peace

Thanks for all the info. I think I am going to go w/ drag bars.

CB, I would get the from you but I am going to order mirrors from cycle-re-cyle as well as new grips. I appreciate the offer though.

I figure drag bars are $15 and if I don't like them I am only out $15. If I buy clip-ons and don't like them I am out at least $45 if not more.

Sorry for the "dorky" comment. I personally don't like the riding stance that the high stock bars provide ('mini-apes'  :D as they've been called in the past). DId'nt mean to offend anyone. Heres my retraction. "I was just SAYING..."

No such thing as a dorky SOHC rider. We cool?

Are you offering PT $10 for his mini apes and $40 for the Avatar?  Or asking me $10 for your drag bars? ;D

If someone wants to give me $10 for the bars in that pic they are sold....
They are actually in real good shape, and allready notched for internal wiring.

hmmm...let me see if i can decipher this.

10 bux + shipping for the drag bars to golden child. (PayPal is good - PM me)

i'm going to remain apeless. i'm headed towards clip-on myself...maybe next season.

"40" was referring to GG's post. he said the avatar was a 10. i can only assume he was referring to his own avatar, which is nice but too small, and anyway, he did his math wrong. i count 4 10's - that makes 40.

No offense taken......just wanted it to be clear that we are not all into the drag or cafe scene.  Stock is cool.  Actually, the older I get, the cooler the stock look seems to me.  I was one of those kids that hung out at the Honda dealer and scarfed up loads of brochures......ahhhhh the good 'ole days!.

drag bars are great, just watch your brake lever/resovoir. mine does not fit correctly with the drag bars (it is mounted in a kind of awkward position). i have some clubmans sitting in my room though. ill see how i like the riding position, i know they will allow my brake lever to fit.
the riding position with drags (i think about 20 bucks from cyclex) is perfect in my mind. at 70 mph it takes no effort from my wrists/back to stay up, i could not take the wind with stock bars, could barely hold on! but im also a bit smaller than many others here (about 5'7" and 130 lbs).

The secret to being comfortable with clubmans IMHO is having a cut down seat.  I'm comfortable with my clubmans but wouldn't be on the stock seat.
