Starter Solenoid
« on: September 14, 2013, 03:42:08 PM »
So I am rewiring my electronics, mainly to get rid on some of the "needless" wires. Long story short, I forgot which wires go where on the Solenoid. Its the stock one and the wiring diagram is a little to spaghetti mess for me. Just need to know which end the Starter cable goes to and if I need to run my Push button starter switch to the solenoid or from the solenoid to the starter. Any help would be most awesome.

Its a 78 CB750 by the way

on the two posts with the nuts it dosent matter which cable goes where,so long as when its mounted the smaller switching wires arent pulled tight or something, mostly youll align it to have them  face in board toward the loom.

Matt you have four wires on the sol. two large and to small. What are the ones you are asking about? But like Dave said it does not matter unless you have some extra wires in that area that you are not sure about.

To make the solenoid work you need to know which type of starter button you have:-

The early ones have one yellow/red wire and the button grounds this to the bars

The later have a black a black/red and a red/yellow and they disconnect the headlamp power and put power down the yellow/red when the button is pushed.

work out which you have and i can tell you how to wire the solenoid

I am using an after market chrome button. Here is a pic of it.

I am much more educated now that I know it doesn't matter which end the which wire goes. As for the lights and the ground wire, this is what I have come up with. Let me know if this is what is correct or not.

the posts with nuts take the heavy cables, one from the battery positive and the other the starter motor, the two thin wires are for the actual start button.

I still ground out the Green/Red wire correct? And I run the start button from the ignition to the switch and then to the Yellow/Red button with a fuse in there somewhere correct? I hate electronics.

if you ground either of those small wires and supply power to the other the solenoid will work.

need to know how the switch works, and what wires you have connected to it

OK ive got the power from the battery going to one end (with the nut) and the other grounded (with the nut). The green cable is grounded and the red cable (both small cables) is going to the starter button. Sound right?

Of course this is why it's nice to have a good color wiring diagram (and know how to use it) before you start an electrical experiment on your bike.

sounds #$%*ing bad man,THE TWO LARGE NUTS ARE FOR THE HEAVY CABLES,ONE FROM THE BATTERY POSITIVE AND THE OTHER TO THE STARTER MOTOR,GROUNDING THE OTHER END WILL PRODUCE SMOKE!its just a relay like for lights or a horn but larger, the switch on the bars connects to the small wires, the battery positive and starter motor connect to the two large nuts.

make sure the two nuts get wired like this, the button switch can work in two ways, either one small wire is grounded then the button supplies positive voltage to the other one,or back to front, one wire is fed voltage via the key switch then the button grounds the other one, either way the solenoid operates and spins the starter motor.
