Alpine Hi points (MX Boots) for street?
« on: September 18, 2013, 04:57:04 PM »
Not sure where to post this but I wanted some long boots so I can protect my legs.  Nothing really matches and the only thing is available are those crotch rocket type boots.  I really like the elsinor1000 from icon or these alpine hi points but those are MX.

Are those comfortable to ride street with and do they offer a better level of protection?

A good pair of MX boots will offer you the most protection in footwear.
And if you get the right size, can be very comfortable.
They will be quite stiff at first, but will break in over a short period of time.
I don't wear them for road riding, but I can but them on in the morning and wear them all day when I am at the races.

I own a set of the Icon 1000 Elsinores. They look great, but are too "new" looking when they're new. They need to be broken in for the look you're going for.

Alpinestar Toucans. Just bought a set, MX level protection, good walking comfort, waterproof (Gortex). Not inexpensive ($450) but worth it.

My favourite street boot so far has been TCX Infinity GTX - ankle/shin/toe protection, gore-tex, warm in winter and waterproof. Had mine for 2 yrs, wore them every day before they leaked - sent them back to Gore-Tex and they replaced the boots for free. So yes they are expensive (I paid $280 in a sale) but you get two boots for the price of one with the Gore-Tex lifetime guarantee.

I have also worn Paratrooper boots from the Army surplus store ($20) for 10 yrs and thousand and thousands of miles. They are also great but no shin protection but they were waterproof if taken care of.

+1 on army boots.  Corcorans saved my toes sliding down the middle of the road near Benesov :)

Thanks for everyone's replies.  Is the Elsinore protective on the shin? I'm afraid it's just a "looker" as this is what I feel most icon products may seem.

I really want a shin guard or plate.

I have recently started looking for a pair of boots as well.  A buddy of mine has the Elsinores and says they are his regular boot for commuting or running around town.  The shin piece is a thick, hard (yeah, yeah) embossed leather, so it would provide some protection.

He aslo has a pair of Forma Boulders that he really likes and says that they are very comfortable.  His only issue is that they don't have anything covering the toe where the shift lever makes contact.

Trials boots nearly all lack that bit. I also find the flat sole strange on a road bike, you lose the reference point on where your feet are especially with large rubber pegs.
