Another "Are These Lesters" question thread.
« on: September 21, 2013, 08:13:55 AM »
...I might pick these up today. But on the phone the seller couldn't find the brand name on them.
He said it looks like they say Asahi on them... along with the other standard size markings..  :o
...but he wasn't sure.

Well then ... Are these Lesters?

Can they be made to work on a 550 or 750 without a lot of difficulty or machining?
Would you need to use the Yamaha rear drum brake assembly?

Not Lesters, Lesters have a small recess machined into the lip around the tyre edge. You can spot them easily if you look for this.

There actually called Hayashi. Member Seanbarney runs a set on his cafĂ© 750. That back one must be a 16" because it looks pretty small,18" would be better. http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=38004.0   Here is a pic of his bike as he was working on this week to carry good ole' Godzilla around Michigan.

Check the spokes ek ;)  Hayashi's are only 5-spoke.  Lesters and Yamaha wheels are 7-spoke, but Lesters don't have the flared spokes that meet the outer edge of the rim.

I'd bet money they're Yammy wheels.

Yep, that's a Lester rim in that pic.

The ones you posted could be Kawasaki mags too.  People have gotten them to work on CB's, but they're still not worth what a Lester set can fetch.

I will bow down to Greggo and some others who are the wheel master's  ;)  :)  Thought in the original post the owner could read something he thought was "ayashi"  You guys seem to turn up the nice wheels out there in the West Coast.

Asahi is the rim manufacturer for a few makes now, which makes me think even more that they are from a Yammy or a Kwaka.

You're right about the rims popping up a lot out here.  I was lucky to grab my set locally from CL for a good deal with the 18" rear, and only a couple thousand miles on them too.

Yeah I have a mint set of Lesters on my 500, I did get a rear Kwack 650 Lester to fit on a 550 Honda, wasn't that hard and it had the added bonus of a bigger diameter rear drum.

Kawasaki wheels were clones of Morris wheels, not Lesters. The spokes of the Morris style have a "+" cross section, while Lesters have an "H" or"I" section. In the attached pic is a real Morris on the left, with a Kawasaki clone on the right.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Looks like a honda disc in the first post pic.. The bolt pattern on Yamaha wheels is same as Honda..
Another thing may help someone here, some YamaMags are 18 inch..may be cheapest way to mount an 18..
The pic below is an 180with ducati rotor.

The Yamaha bolt pattern is the same, but the ID of the rotor is 2mm greater than the Honda, at least with the Yamaha rotors I'm using.

Yes the rotors may need center spacers. That bike will end up on the street, i hope..my buddy took it back to Alberta..Calary.... Hope its easy to register a homebuilt there.
When we first got that bike it had about a 12 over sprnger and a coffin tank on it..
I mentioned the 18 cuz most guys end up spending 150 for a rim, 80+ for spokes.. Gets pricey fast..

Just for your info. These look like wheels made in Brazil by a company called Scorro. If you do a research on google you can find many pictures of them under the search SCORRO RICK PAUL WHEEL/RIM.
I have those in my 750 76 F1. I brought a set direct from Brazil and the front ones are 19"and rear 18" , BUT mine are 19 because I have the rear brake discs. The drum bikes use 16.
Hope I could help you.

I meant my are 18 in the rear because the disc brake. The drum brake models are 16"
I don't know how to upload picture in this forum. But if you want to see pictures of mine just drop me an email and I'll send them over to you.
By the way they are not as close as good quality as Lester. They look better in my opinion but spcially the front ones are prone to cracking, so be aware if you are getting one for your bike. To find a good front wheel is hard.
