Guess I have a 500 motor on a 550 frame? So I need to look for airbox parts for a 500?

That's what I thought. Looks like you have a 1976 CB550 K2 frame with a 1971 CB500 K0 engine.

So, yes, my airbox set will work for you. I have everything for it except for the tool tray (which you already have). The boots are not new but they are still pliable and don't leak. Let me know if you're interested.

Well shat. Is this a problem? I'm guessing not. So...now I need to look for parts for a 500 frame.

No, there's no issue with it. Usually, you'll see the opposite setup with a 550 engine in a 500 frame. There were some transmission improvements with the 550 but I've really enjoyed my 500. The frames are almost identical between the two bikes as well.

It's just something to keep in mind when you're ordering parts so you know which fiche to look at.

I don't think I need any frame parts. I typed that wrong. I meant to say that I should be looking for CB500 parts if I need things for the motor. I am in Woodland Park.

Cool not to far.
I just scored some 72 500 parts, side covers and tank.
I also have parts for the airbox if you don't get setup from earlier post's.

Any way to know if the stock box pieces I have are for the 500? If so then I would just need the boots and the filter and some hardware. Thanks everyone for the help.

They look like cb500 airbox parts to me. The 550 had some extra tube inlets for the engine vent hose to connect to.

Well this box does have an extension where a hose would go onto it and while I was checking for the VIN off the motor I did notice an extension coming off the valve cover. Thought I read somewhere that there should be a hose connecting the two?

The CB500 has a vent on the engine head and and a drain hose on the bottom plenum box. Both should vent to atmosphere and point towards the ground below and behind the engine block. The drain tube is part #13 in the fiche:
http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb500-500-four-k0-usa_model459/partslist/F++13.html#results

The CB550 had the drain hose and an additional inlet on the airbox itself, directly under the air filter. See parts #20 (airbox), #31 (drain tube) and #26 (breather hose) in the fiche:

So it looks like I have the 500 airbox parts but need the 4 rubber pieces that connect to the carbs, 2 vent lines, a grommet between the air box and the air filter box, and an air filter. Do you all buy parts from that site or just mostly use it for reference? I have sent PM's to both wowbagger and 78550 but also just want to know where to go for this kind of stuff in the future.

I normally use it just to find the honda part numbers. If it is still available and I want new parts I'll order from www.partzilla.com. Otherwise I'll check the parts for sale here or hit eBay as a last resort.

Here's some photos to show how the airbox should mount:

My front brake has the switch to operate the stop light but the wiring was not there. The issue for me was that I wasn't sure if I had a 500 or 550 wiring harness now. After looking at some diagrams, it looks like a 550 harness. I tested the switch and it showed infinite resistance so then I ran some jumper wires and it worked. I got it all wired up tonight. I'm not sure what kind of connectors the switch uses because bullet connectors were too lose. I ended up soldering them on and it works fine now. I also found a small oil leak. I pulled the left side cover off and the shifter shaft seal is wasted. While I'm there I'll probably replace the clutch rod seal and the counter shaft sprocket seal. Can anyone confirm that the CS sprocket seal can be replaced without splitting the cases (with 2 pick tools)? Couldn't find any write ups. Thanks.

While you are in there make sure that your clutch shift rod is in one piece and that the clutch actuator doesn't have any cracks around the collar. Those are the two most common issues with the 500 clutch.

Update of sorts:

I got the stock air pieces all in place (thanks wowbagger). I have checked the points gap (set them to .035) and timing (good) with feeler gauges and the light bulb method. I've done everything on the 3,000 mile tune up except valve adjustment and cam chain adjustment. Bike still fires up nicely but I have to nurse it along with the throttle to keep it from dying. When it's warm, I will have a hanging idle at about 2500 when coming to a stop. This will eventually fall back down in a few seconds but then I have to nurse it along with the throttle again. Runs fine while riding around though with steady throttle. Something is obviously not right but I just don't know enough about motorcycles. I keep going back to carb issues but wanted to stay away from that until I had done all other things. I still need to run a vent hose from the top of the motor and another from the bottom of the air intake but I don't think that's going to solve the idle issues. Any suggestions? Sorry but I can't tell you anything about the carbs (like jet size or anything else). Really not sure that I should try and rebuild these on my own. The other issue that I notice is that I get a fair amount of gray smoke out of the exhaust (cylinder 4 on a 4 to 1 set up). Could be oil but it smells really rich. The plug on that cylinder was black and sooty.
