Right hand control wiring question
« on: September 21, 2013, 04:48:02 PM »
I am rewiring my 1975 CB440f and having some confusion with the right hand wiring.  These should be for the starter,  and off-run-off button.  I know the yellow/red wire goes back to the starter relay thing and I have the black/white going to the coils.  Do the black/black double wires just go to power?  Where does the black/red go?

Oh and the black/black and black/white originate from the upper control (kill switch area)
the yellow/red and black/red come from the strarter button area

The black white powers the coils.  Comes in black to kill switch goes out black/white.

Both blacks have power coming in-one will power black/white and the other power the black/red, which will supply power to the headlight...Larry

Headlight, coils, and start.
Black and yellow is the start button wire.

I am in favor of getting two separate switches so that way
you can turn the headlight on AFTER it starts.

Just remember to turn on the headlight.

Thanks guys.  I have the headlight wire going through an extra switch like you suggested Lucky.  Now I am just trying to figure out why, when I press the starter button, I can hear the solenoid click but the starter doesn't go.  When I connect the two terminals on the starter solenoid it goes.

I got one of the solid state regulator/rectifiers to replace the OEM stuff and still working through other wires.  Does the green just go to ground along with the green from the alternator?  I have the Clymer manual and all the greens, black and crap just goes on and on to power other lights, safety switches so I haven't become proficient at reading these things yet.  Before this I have only wires up a simple Triumph chopper with not electric start, turn signals or warning lights.

I am tempted to just ignore the diagrams and wire things how it makes sense to me and then see if everything works.

When you say connect the two terminals on the solenoid do you mean you are jumping the two main terminals?...Larry

Momo, Yes if I put a wire from one terminal and touch it to the other, the start motor goes.  I just did that to check and see if for some reason the starter was broken.  When I got this bike it had been sitting for ~8 years and it wasn't all together.  It seems like the PO had wired in a momentary button do do just this (jump the terminals) because the button on the handlebars had crapped out.

Disconnect the two smaller gauge wires from the solenoid(one is yellow/red and the other green/red).  Use two jumper wires, ground the g/r and run 12v to the y/r- that will verify that the solenoid is good if the bike starts.  If it doesn't your problem will either be a switch or wiring...Larry

I did what you said Momo and it had the same effect as when I had it wired trough the starter button.  Solenoid clicks but wasn't turning the starter.  I am going to try pulling te solenoid from a cb550 I have here and trying with that one, to see if it's a solenoid failure or something else.

A solenoid can be cleaned fairly easily.  I've taken a few apart, cleaned out, reassembled and they were good to go.  Of course though, if you have a spare it is easy to replace...larry

The solenoid from the 550 had no problems once I wired it in.  Guess I just need to rebuild the first solenoid.  Thanks for your time and patience Momo, it is appreciated.
