Installing Master Link Clip
« on: September 21, 2013, 05:41:56 PM »
Okay, I am finishing up my 77 750K restoration. Will post picks soon. I am having a Hell of a time trying to install
the master link clip on this o ring chain. Can't seem to get those o rings to compress enough with the flat plate on
to get the clip on were it's in the grooves on master link post. I just broke the clip. Now to find another. Is there a secret
to this. Also was size is the stock o-ring chain on a 77 750K. Thanks

Stock chain for a 77 is 630. Were you supposed to compress the plate before you installed the clip with a clamp maybe. ?  What brand is it, sure somebody here has played with it.

Yup
I did my first O ring chain this summer and had the same problem.
I think I used a small vice grips to squeeze the link and finally got it.
There must be a tool.

I had to use some small vise grips to compress it while sliding on the clip as well.

makde sure the clip is facing the right direction too.

lucky you really need to get over your issue with the 630 chain. There is nothing wrong with it and you CAN NOT prove there is. This is just your opinion NOT a fact.

Katman What ever size chain you are using make sure the master link is for a o-ring chain. The post are a little longer for the o-ring it is longer so you don't crush the O-rings

I have the same bike. I never used anything other than the original endless chain. It takes five minutes to take the swing arm off. Why bother with anything else but the original endless?
I don't know what the issue with the 630 chain is, but that is what I have been using for 36 years and well over 200,000 miles.

The side plates are usually a press fit so you really need to use a small vise grip to get them seated. You can then get the clip on.

The K7-K8 bikes were made for the 630 chain. Lucky has some 630 phobia which is true for earlier models.

I use a large vice grip and a pair of 6mm nuts to stand over the pins. Tighten the vice, whack it with a hammer, tighten again and whack. The late will move slowly onto the pins.

Once the plate is seated and the groove is fully, but not overly exposed, the clip will pop right on.

If you struggle with the clip, the plate isn't on far enough.

Lol, I'm still using the 630 (non O-ring chain) on my 77 & my kz1000 has one as well, nothing wrong with it.
