Slipping out of 5th (when clicking in)
« on: September 03, 2013, 01:24:14 PM »
Sorry everyone, dragging this issue up again (for me)...

Symptoms:
So the Bike has been completely rebuilt by me. First engine/tranny rebuild ever for me. The bike has new rings/seals/gaskets and a donor tranny from ebay.
First to fourth all shift and stay in gear perfectly. Fifth however all ways drops out into a high-reving "false neutral" sort of place...I can click it back down into 4th (which then stays in 4th normally) or click it back up into 5th where it will either stay for a bit or drop out again and then I repeat clicking up until it stays...It usually drops out again....

After talking to Kurt at Valley Cycles, he thought if I am lucky it could be a clutch-slipping issue...I am hopign it it, as I do not want to split the cases if I don't have to...What would be your advise/next step?

I will try readjusting the clutch and crossing my fingers

I am running MOTUL 5100 10W40 (break in/non-synthetic)

The bike has 130miles on it since rebuild

Thank you for any ideas

Major clutch slippage should be felt in the lower gears also if that was the case.

I agree the clutch would slip in all gears. You have a problem with the tranny or linkage.

When you swapped trannies did you swap the whole assembly's or did you take the shafts apart and change just bad gears? Did you have a trans problem before and that's why you changed it out.Which shift forks did you use,the ones from your old tranny or a different pair that came with the 'new' one? 2nd gear is problem with the dogs as I think 4th gear also and are more common. Maybe good ole' Hondaman can school us a little on 5th gear problems. Where is our Superhero  :)

I swapped out everything...the original tranny was clearly grinding on itself and showed signs of obvious wear (and didn't work) it was jammed in permanent 2nd

Fork wear seen here (these were replaced)

New (swapped) tranny here

Here's the last picture I have of the tranny before the cases went together

I guess it's possible it could be a shifter drum issue? Maybe?

Back in the day I use to pull wheelies and shift between 1st and 2nd with the front tire in the air.  After showing off this way several times I notice I could go through the gears and when I went from 4th to 5th, no 5th, like I was in neutral.  Turns out I stripped the notches in 5th gear.  Apparently the dogs from 4th engage with the 5th gear notches and the same movement occurs when you shift between 1st and 2nd i.e. the 4th to 5th dogs engage.  I had to split the cases and replace, I'm thinking 5th gear.

So hopefully this is not your problem but something tells me you are going to have to split the cases!

Found another tranny pic before the cases went together...I doubt it can answer any 5th gear slipping questions, but I thought I'd post regardless...
