Carbs are out! Rotation binding? *Updated-Resolved*
« on: September 21, 2013, 12:02:12 PM »
Removed the carbs last night and started disassembling them. I noticed that the rotator shaft/assembly seems to bind somewhat when I rotate the throttle wheel. When the carbs were still mounted on the bike, I always assumed that the throttle was just old and stiff and needed some help rotating back to idle. But now after removing the carb assembly, it seems like the PO may have installed/mounted them wrong. I also disconnected the needle cylinders from the linkage to see if they were causing it but it still binds. I cleaned out the parts that rotate on the shaft with a nylon brush and some lubricant, but still binds. I then loosened all 8 screws on the back of the bracket that all of the carbs mount to and it seems to move a little more freely, but still stiff and binds some. Should I go ahead and completely remove each carb and see if that shows the problem? Am thinking that somehow they are getting torsion on them or they are not aligned properly. Also, I noticed that there is a small metal bracket between 2 of the carbs that is bent upward a little. See photo. Any suggestions?

It's hard to tell, but is the throttle return spring installed correctly?

Which is the throttle return spring? The cylindrical shaped one that is vertical in the photo with the black casing? Or is it the thin cloths pin style spring mounted on the shaft that rotates? I assume they are both mounted correctly but no idea what the PO may have done...

The one with the black sleeve.

The bottom end should be connected to a pin between the two middle carbs and the top should be connected to the return arm on the throttle linkage.

Can you take a closer picture of it?

I had a similar problem with my 500/4 the flat plate between the carb adjusters keeps them the correct distance apart, so if bent can allow the adjuster body to catch on the carb causing a tight spot, a new one solved my problem.

Carbs are rebuilt and back in! I resolved the binding issue. It was indeed the bent plate between the two carbs. Flattened it out in a vice reinstalled and adjusted screws. The action is now smooth as silk! Its 3am here and I don't think the neighbors would be too crazy about me firing her up right now.  ;) Updates and photos coming tomorrow.

**WOW! Never realized how much junk builds up in theses carbs!**
