retiring
« on: September 15, 2013, 01:17:23 AM »
Hiya Fellers, I have finally done the deed and sold my last bike (cb400f). I have not lost interest or desire for motorbiking but for other reasons, it had to happen.
My wife is dis-abled and cannot be left for more than about 1 to 2 hours so that stopped me from going for a half day pleasure ride or to a race meeting. Plus the fact that I'm 85.
I found that last year I was only able to do about 50 to 100 miles and basic expenses (tax, insurance, MOT, fuel and maintainence)
meant that it was costing about £4 per mile covered.
Not very economic, I think you will agree.
I shall continue to monitor the SOHC website and hopefully retain friendship with all you members.
Anyway, in advance Merry Christmas and keep wearing out the side of your boots,
yours very sincerely, John Baker. (oldbiker_baker)

John,

Congratulations on such a long lived life of riding. Your wisdom will always be anticipated on the forum. Guess this means I should be good for another 20 years or so  :)

I will consider myself lucky if I make it to 85, not to mention if I can ride!

I think we totally understand your decision, and even when it surely was hard to see your bike go, you  were leaving behind an intense biking life and probably you leave no things undone when it comes biking.

You have devoted much time to biking; now that your better half needs your attention the right thing to do is to give it plenty.

Even if you don't ride anymore, your posts here are always appreciated. So please stick around!

Hi John,

Congratulations on retiring elegantly.
I do not know if it was well publicized outside the U.S., but Frank Sinatra retired numerous times, so there is at least one famous precedent should you choose to buy another bike down the road.

I also want to thank you, as several years ago we corresponded concerning music, and you gave me the idea of going to a smaller bike as larger ones become more of a handful. I hope to extend my biking years by following your example.

Best wishes to you and your wife!
Ben
