Oil pressure light faint glow?
« on: September 24, 2013, 03:25:35 PM »

So, now that I have the engine running again, I need to put a plan in place for the wiring. I replaced the old ignition switch with a new EMGO switch...works great!. Also cleaned the wiring shields with CRC and wrapped them in loom. So far so good. I will also be replacing the glass fuse block with an ATC unit. Now, I have a couple of questions. First, I'm still a little baffled about the tail light. I know it is supposed to come on in the #2 position, which it does. But shouldn't it also be on in the #1 position as well. (RUN?) I mean, if you ride at night, surely you would want this on with the other running lights?  ???  Second, my oil pressure light has a faint glow after the engine starts and warms up. Its bright red when you first switch the key on, but fades out after  the engine is running, to faint red, but never actually goes all the way out. I took the oil pressure sending unit out and cleaned it, but still does the same thing. Is this normal, should it always have that faint glow? Or should it go out completely until there is an oil pressure issue? I have not checked the oil screen yet, which I can tonight. I suppose I could take the oil pump out as well if needed. Thoughts?

As for the semi glowing oil light I had that problem on a 750 that perplexed me for awhile. You broke the golden rule by not putting in model and year (looks like a 550) but do you have the (4) dummy lights that mount at the bottom of your handlebar ? If so pull that housing and look for a burn through hole around your oil pressure bulb. Its plastic under the metal. What happens is a hole is created and then your neutral bulb will give a faint glow once the bright light of the actual oil pressure light goes out. Black RTV is a cheapo fix to plug that hole  ;)

My opinion on that would be a bad contact in the sender/switch ( put a meter on it & the voltage may not be dropping to zero) or a crack in the wire insulation somewhere.
Easiest is to change out the sender, aftermarket ones are cheap.
As to the other issue, can you clarify what switch you are changing to position 1 & 2?
Is the "run" position the kill switch? Or... What?

My apologies... I thought the avatar photo...well, never mind. :)  Yes, I do have the 4 lights at the bottom of the handlebar. I will check for the hole that you mentioned. I will also check the switch to see if the voltage drops to zero. I wasn't sure what the specs were supposed to read on it, but will certainly check that. Thanks!

Again, I apologize for not clarifying about the switch. The IGNITION switch. (EMGO) It has 2 positions... and of course OFF. So, the first turn of the key, position 1 turns on the running lights, neutral lights etc. The second turn of the key, position 2, only turns on the tail light, which I know it is supposed to...but shouldn't the tail light illuminate with the position 1 also?

Let us know what you find, hopefully I am saving you some worry and hassle. Take off the 4 bolts and there is a clip that holds the cheesy plastic housing to the aluminum holder

OK, that switch, yes  since I think you don't have a separate light switch, it should work in both positions.  Did you install the Emgo? did it used to work?  I'm thinking wiring issue at the switch, maybe missing jumper wire on a contact or solder cracked.
