Front wheel bearings
« on: September 25, 2013, 04:29:56 AM »
All I was I going to do last night was to check the tire pressure and ended up spending several hours fixing it  >:(

My front wheel bearings had 11 000 miles on them, I know, I changed them when I got the bike for fully sealed bearings.  While I was checking the tire, I realized the front wheel has 2 mm play side to side.  Took the wheel out, sure enough the right side bearing inner race was wobbling, the left bearing was passable but nothing tight.

While knocking the bearings out they actually disintegrated and I had am hour long fun getting the left outer ring out of the hub, it was not easy.

I saved original bearings and they were in good shape, I drove them in the hub and  reassembled the bike.

I am not sure, where I got those $hitty bearings, I think it was some reputable source, but I don't remember.  11 000 miles on bearings, what a joke.

I finally had the time to clean up the pieces from bearings.  Races are clean, no dents but all the balls I could find are chewed up. Looks like this bearing set was made with soft(er) balls and over the time they got all mangled.  Hence the wobble.

That is crappy...I changed all mine out a while ago. Never thought I would have to do it again. Any idea the brand?

The oil seal (if not mangled to smithereens) might give us a clue (please dont be KML! haha)
