Removing the cam chain tensioner
« on: September 26, 2013, 06:11:07 PM »
Is it possible to remove it without taking the engine out of the frame on a 550? I have the valve cover off, no go. Maybe if I take the head off?

You can for sure remove it without pulling the engine from the frame. You need to strip it down to the cylinder though. Pull the head and it becomes simple from there.

Its easier with the cylinder off as well and if you pull the head its a good idea to redo the base gasket and "O" rings anyway

DONT FORGET THE WARNINGS ON RE-FITTING THE VALVE COVER

Yeah...I actually just got it together from a full engine rebuild. I'm currently lubricating everything with my tears at having to take it back apart. Very discouraging. This project has gone on too long. I just want to get on the road but I'm still a long way off.

pay attention to the reassembly, drop the pan when you do it and be sure this dosent happen to you!the lower end is easily miscued out of its little locating well or slot, this is very hard to spot from above.

heres a shot of an open lower case i used to show where a sloppy primary chain can rub on the case, you can see the slot or well your aiming for when dropping the barrel and tensioner down into place.
