Clutch lifter rod does not fit into sled!
« on: September 24, 2013, 01:24:08 PM »
Hi All

After renovating my cb500 engine a tried to install the clutch today. For some reason the clutch rod does not fit into the clutch "sled". It seems that the rod is a tiny bit to large in diameter or the sled is a tiny bit to small. The rod only goes in very Little but does not get in touch with the steel ball at all. What can be wrong here? And how tight should the rod go into the sled?

Maybe just some dirt and sand in there.. Try cleaning/re-lubing.

Is the rod supposed to go in tight or does it sit loose in the sled? I need to know how much I should open up the hole in the sled.

Something not right there. The spring should never be that stretched. Either the rod is too short or it's mushroomed out on the ball bearing, which is common by the way and would also account for why it doesn't want to go back in.

Not trying for a sale here but I'll be selling most of the parts you can see in your pics shortly, all are NOS. I have what you call the sled, I call it the worm drive, the seal, the horseshoe clamp, got 2 of the outer sleeves the worm drive engages into and around 8 og the ball bearings.

The only reason the spring is so stretch is because of the way the cover was placed when taking the picture.

By sled I mean the thing that the rod goes into on the left side (worm drive also makes sense)

I still need to know how tight the rod should sit in the "worm drive"?

I can check for you this weekend, but my understanding is that the rod is supposed to go in all the way, so that the end of the push rod is in contact with the ball bearing on the inside of the lifter sleever (sled?).

So part #7, so make contact with part #17. Part #17 sits in the right most side (in the picture) to part #3.

I have found that this post is also very useful in gaining a better understanding of how the system works.

On my bike the rod Does not have contact with part 17 because the hole in part 3 is a bit to narrow for the rod to go in all the way. I think that I need to open up the hole a bit with my dremel.

No don't do that. The problem will lie with the push rod, the end tends to mushroom out due to contact with the ball bearing, I've seen them so mushroomed the ball bearing has stuck to the rod. When it's mushroomed it spreads the head out and that's why it won't fit the hole anymore, either a new rod (try measuring it's length to see how much it's lost over the years) or file the end down a little so it fits again.
