Broken valve tappet cover HELP
« on: September 25, 2013, 04:40:40 PM »
I just finished adjusting the valves as part of my 3,000 mile tune up on my 75 CB750f and messed up the torque settings.

I literally broke off the top of the tappet cover, sheared it clear off. Now I'm stuck with just the threads in the engine block.

Before I mess anything else up, does anyone have recommendations on how to remove the bottom half of the tappet cover without causing more damage? I searched broken tappet cover, but couldn't find anything.

Any help would be great.

Thanks.

much of the time, with a little care, you can unscrew the threads intact.

yep, been thru this myself.  this is usually from overtightening the caps.  with good orings, finger tight plus +/- a quarter turn is all you need.

#1 - be careful no metal shavings go down into the tappet hole!!!!

with good gloves on, get your fingers in there and see if it will twist out by hand.
if not, dab some PB blaster on the sheared thread area a few times, and let it set overnight.
try turning it out with your fingers in the morning....

No gloves were necessary. I tried using needle nose pliers to make it budge and it moved instantly, so I just threaded it out with my fingers. I don't think anything fell into the engine. At least nothing I could see. Good thing these covers are readily available.

Thanks guys.
