Topic: I need new wheels what are my options?

Hello
I discovered rust holes in my rim when changing a tube on the weekend.
I have a 72 CB750. The spokes are also rusty and some a bit bent.
Is there options other than genuine Honda rims or are they the best way to go

Your gonna spend quite a bit on nos rims for your bike. If u are keeping it close to stock then do that or if u don't mind aftermarket upgrades u could get some nice aluminums and new thicker spokes from buchanans. I went with an 18" rim up front and wider on both rims 110 front and 150 rear on my 76'(not sure if u could go that wide with yours without further modification). I preferred the look and I think the bike handles great. Just got a taller profile for front so my speedo still is real close.

I purchased from Buchanan also, except I went with their in house brand, Sun rims. 2.15" front and 2.75" rear. I opted for the polished rims and polished stainless spokes...absolutely gorgeous, although not cheap. Lots lighter than stock too. I like the look of the Sun rims with no brand marks and at a distance they look like they could be stock.

75/76 Goldwing rims can be laced to 750 hubs!! Some GLs had D.I.D rims!!

I'm not too fussed about keeping the wheels stock looking. Here in Oz I have been quoted $300 to lace each wheel and that includes the spokes in that price.
I may need to phone Buchanans and get a price off them, but I guess it would mean sending my hubs over first before they could build me some wheels which would have my bike off the road for longer.

I checked with Honda in USA and the rim is about $20 cheaper than ebay and delivery is only about $12.  But they can't ship to Australia

You can def go wider...I think the widest tire you could put on might be a 140 without hitting chain/swingarm at most 150.

Also lacing the wheel isn't too bad, I never did it before and was able to do mine in about 1.5-2 hrs. You can see wear marks from the old spokes on the hub so its not too hard to figure out just takes a little patience and maybe a couple brews. I just took mine to the shop to have them true them and double check so I didnt crash since it was my first time.

The wider rear tire and new wheels are my favorite upgrade because it gives the bikes a little more of a modern and aggressive look plus I think it puts a little more rubber down at steeper lean.

Go with a WM3 front rim and WM 4 or WM 5 rear The rim dictates the tyres you use
WM3 is 2.15" inside the flanges, 2.50 or 2.75 is about max you can get in swing arm (with 140~150 tyre)

I bought it from eBay, believe it was $95 shipped.  It was new in the box but from an individual, think he had a change of plan.

I recommend stainless spokes unless you plan to flip the bike. $300 to lace with spokes I is high but not totally outrageous.  Buchanan's charges $107 but then you would have to pay shipping...

Shipping to Oz is going to cost a bomb.
I doubt if you would get any change from $1200 if you sent hubs and said 'go for it'
Get rims and spokes shipped and DIY or contact 'local' vintage club, there are plenty of people building stuff and can build wheels.
I shipped parts to various people in Oz so know they are there. I think Sydney has a 'cafe' club you may do well to search on DTT (Do The Ton) or CafeRacer.net as they are generally building smaller bikes rather than CB750's so probably wouldn't be visiting this site
DTT has Australian section, this is a post from guy in Sydney, it started a long time ago but is still 'active'

I think I will get the stainless spokes from Buchanans.
What are your thoughts on alloy rims for strength. When I was changing tubes on the weekend ( flat tyre rear then 200km latter flat tyre front) I had to put alot of force on the rim with the tyre levers to get the tyres off and on again. I was thinking at the time I wonder how alloys would handle that force

Alloys will be no issue if tires are removed/mounted properly. I prefer not to mess with mine, I know a guy that mounts and balances for $20, and has the proper equip - a tire machine.

I don't mess with mine either unless I have to
But on the weekend I got a flat rear with no help near by and then when the front went flat we were even further from help ( paid help) changed the tube and kept going, luckily no further isues cause I had no spare tubes and no repair kit and then pushed my luck doing a couple of dirt roads

Alloy rims will be about 6 lbs lighter than stock rims.
