I'm still alive. Wish I was fishing. Don's right. School is back in session. It's going to be an interesting year. Our enrollment has been on the rise for the last 5 years and it's worse every year. It's great job security but I've never had my own classroom and I share an office with 3 other people so it's frustrating at times, hard to get anything done, and tough for studednts. We are a 6-8 building and now have a little over 1200 students. Class sizes are approaching 40 and the number of challenging special education students moving into the community is alarming. We allow choice here in CO so if parents want to transport their child to our school and their application is accepted then we take them. We no longer take SPED students by choice because it's impacting the services we can provide to our neighborhood students. I have an enormous amount of behaviors this year. Yesterday and today I ran around all day when I wasn't teaching dealing with a student barking at teachers during class, kids that were MIA (not skipping just didn't know where to go so sitting in the hall or bathroom seemed like a good idea), one that insisted that he wasn't himself but his binder was and demanded the teacher call on his binder, refusals to work, hands on, and more. A new middle school is being built and is scheduled to open next year and then the boundaries will get redrawn and we'll finally get some relief.

I haven't done squat with the squirrel. Depending on the weather, I may start taking it apart over Thanksgiving and seeing if the cables and brake line are still going to work with the 400 bars. Pretty sure I have enough supplies left over to do the actual rewire but still need to order some stuff like the gauge mount and breakout box.

Can understand how busy can be, but you you better ride that bike now when possible.  I was in CO last weekend and it's already getting into the upper 40's at night.   Fall comes quick up there and the snow will be falling soon.

Back in TX, I can't wait for temps to fall....

Yes....we've already had some snow up high so I'm sure my days are numbered. I'd really like to start installing the new gauge but I also hate to waste any days left with the bike down. The Motogadget mount for the gauge arrived. Today I made a tab to mount the speed sensor.

I need to find some small enough washers and then I'll use a bit of Loctite on the sensor threads and it should be fine. Still need to buy a breakout box.

polyurethane glue is stronger than epoxy, just messier when it foams up...
smooth chrome, epoxy...hmmm
might want to buy an extra magnet(s) just in case.

I have an extra one that came with the gauge and now I’m rethinking things. I guess I was just thinking that wheel weights are held on so this magnet shouldn’t be difficult. I don’t want to cut the wire for the sensor and find out later on that the epoxy doesn’t work and have to change locations. The magnet is only 5mm in diameter and 2mm tall so maybe it would be smarter to drill the end of one of the rotor bolts and put it in there? At least then I’d have whatever adhesive I use under it and on the sides.

Cal does his in the side cover for the front sprocket, very stealthy. But he pops a bolt in the lathe for his magnet and recesses it enough to give clearance. With a drill press you could drill the head of a sprocket bolt or rough it up and attach...provided you have space for the sensor to read the bolt correctly. Looks like a long sensor. Does the magnet have to pass the end of the sensor or can it pass the edge of the end? More room for attaching the sensor without error if the sensor is mounted radially so the magnet passes the end of the sensor but the magnet is 90 degrees perpendicular to the sensor, as opposed to how you were going to have it pass the sensor on the wheel.

I epoxied the magnet to the sprocket bolt, no lathe involved. You can buy bolts that have a magnet already in them  ;)

Electrical question. I finished installing the Motoscope Pro several weeks ago and it works beautifully. This gauge calls for two 12 volt wires. The brown comes from AUX off the M Unit and wants a 1 amp inline fuse. This keeps the clock on the gauge working when the bike is parked. The red wire comes straight from batt POS and also needs a 1 amp inline fuse. This is the only difference I can see between the old analog gauges and the new one. One of the 1 amp fuses was bad and I swapped in a 5 amp after the install just to make sure things worked. Bikes been sitting now for a few weeks and M Unit won’t power up. Battery was showing 3.5V. It’s charging now but do I have a drain on the battery or maybe the battery is just done?

Battery is a Scorpion AGM and it’s probably two years old and it did just get cold a few weeks ago so it could just be done. I have another one but it’s been on a shelf for about that long. Swapped it in and it shows 12V with key off but when I power up the M Lock and M Unit it drops to 8 and then the M Unit shuts off which it’s supposed to do when the vilts hit 8. I’ll charge this battery over night and see what happens in the morning. Bike does start with the kicker and volts show up to 14 when revving it. I disconnected the negative cable from the battery and switched my meter to amps and put one probe on negative cable and the other on negative post and the meter shows 0 so I believe there’s no issue with drain (be great if someone could confirm I’m doing that test correctly).

I would not run a direct wire from the MotoScope to battery +. That is a constant drain. If that supplies background power to the clock, then the drain should be very low.

It is also possible that you left the HI activated when killing the MU. That leaves the bike in a PARK condition, and THAT will drain the battery. Always make dead certain the LO is active before killing the power to the MU.

I figured it had to be draining a tiny amount but that’s how Motogadget says to wire it in the manual.

Ordered a new battery (Scorpion AGM) and everything is fine. Temps really dropped here so the battery is inside the house and on a trickle charger. Bike is prepped for a winter’s nap and under a cover.

I’ve seen the M Unit shut down upon hitting the starter button after hearing the solenoid click (because the volts are dropping to 8-9). This time the lights would not dance around the M Unit at all after waving the fob over the M Lock. The bottom three lights on input side would just faintly flicker. This is why I thought I had something bigger going on. Battery was showing 12 but I don’t know what the other specs were but didn’t really trust the battery because it was almost 3 years old.

Unless I were going to be riding this winter I would have delayed that purchase until spring when signs of the break in weather were apparent, how is your battery maintenance charger?

Well I can see where you would think that. But because the battery was on the tender for two days and still wouldn’t crank the starter and because I wasn’t sure if there was another bigger issue that I would have to tackle over the long winter, ordering a $54 battery seemed like the smartest choice.
