Did you see the article about Tilapia skin being used for burn victims in Brazil to aid in healing and pain management.  The sterile and clean it, descale it, and treat it as well as bond a fabric or material to it making it easier to trim and apply. It has shown to work extremeky well in helping the flesh beneath to develop the "healing" needed after a burn, no skin of course, but the trials have shown faster recovery with far less pain.  Collagen and vitamins and other things in the skin are apparently very helpful in reduction of pain and the healing.  More uses for a common part that is disposed of normally.  It is pretty cool.  Naturally they are changing this dressing many times during the healing process.

Meant to say satchel, not satchet...  a satchel being a pack.
You have good riding gear, when closeouts like this time of year is a good time to buy...fwiw

You could fit the bike with a custom fly rod tube carrier along with a satchet to strap on behind you for your waders and any other gear needed to go fishing...Then you could have a smile on your face for when riding to and coming back, not caused by the fishing, if the fishing is good it could be all the broader smile across your face.

Riding squirrel to the river to fish was the original plan but I've never done it yet. I just got a call the other day and was approved to be in a club on some private water that's 13 minutes from my door. I could never even dream of joining a place like this due to the cost but I fell completely a$$ backwards into the deal. It's a spring fed creek that forms a series of ponds (with skinny creek water in between) with some huge fish in it. The bad news is that it's a few miles of gravel road and I probably wouldn't ever ride down it just because of the dust and my OCD.

Not a good day today for me or the squirrel. I took it for a quick ride around town to get the oil hot and was going to drain it. I was doing it at the bottom of the driveway and had it on the track stand and put the kickstand up so I could put the drain pan under it. Got distracted by something and then came back to the bike and realized I wanted it pointing the other direction to help drain the pan. Went to put it down and forgot about the kickstand. Down she went.

I quickly started to pick her up and paused about halfway up because I really didn't wanna see what happened. Then I put the kickstand down and had a look. Not a scratch on the tank. The alternator cover (think that's my fourth one) is scratched as is the mirror and just the tip of the clutch lever. I got very lucky. Eventually I got the exhaust pulled, and the oil drained. Then I detailed the whole bike and dropped the oil pan. I have a new pan gasket on the way so I wanted to get that area cleaned up. Found a bunch of metal in the pan. The vast majority of it was aluminum. Gears and everything I can see from below look fine and I don't recall anything unusual during the top end rebuild. What I do recall is the condition of the head when I removed it. The PO had stripped the threads on the end of the head and instead of drilling it out and putting in a heli coil someone drilled it out much larger than it needed to be, looks like they slipped with the drill as well, then put some RTV down in the hole and hammered a nut down in there.

I'll clean the pan out. Pick up screen did its job. I'll get a new gasket on (that and some other stuff is on the way) and get it back together. I am considering cutting down my front fender. I'd like to get a Motolanna one but figured I'd try it with mine first since its got a lot of dents anyways. Then I'll be able to soften up the front suspension a bit.

What about swapping to an 18" front rim and 400 front fender? Would only cost you the rim and spokes. You might be able to sell the fender for an even swap too.

That is an idear but I'd want to do a nice black rim and stainless spokes and have the hub polished up. Then I'd have someone build the wheel and get a new tire and a fender. Then I know I'd have to do a rear wheel as well. If I swap front wheels I'm going to go all in and do a modern conversion.

You can get an extra hub, lace it yourself to a new rim. Stick with stock front suspension, but maybe upgrade to emulators for better performance.

Then replace the rear hub and spokes as needed. Less money, better handling, more custom look than stock, but still very traditional looking and classy.

Recently drained the oil on squirrel and found some metal in the pan. This could have been from when the previous owner butchered the head. He stripped the threads on the end of the head under the cam cap where the L bracket secures to. Instead of putting in a Helicoil he drilled it out, put some RTV in the hole and then pounded a nut in. Looks like he drilled it out blindfolded because it was all chewed up. Of course all that was replaced when I did the top end. All the gears and internals looked fine from what I could see wen I pulled the pan. The oil was not changed after the top end was swapped so it could be left over from his work. We'll see.

This morning there was a healthy leak under the motor after sitting all night. I pulled the left side engine cover to have a look. I previously replaced all seals under the left cover (but have never done anything with the oil pump). Looks like the shift shaft seal might be weeping a tad but there's definitely oil coming from behind the pump. So I'll now pull it and replace the o rings behind it. Can anyone confirm whether or not I need to drain the oil before pulling the pump? Also...is there any need to actually rebuild the pump or am I just replacing the o rings? I know a member here sells the kit for $42 on eBay but I'm not planning on dropping the pan again to swap out the pickup screen.

It's very ironic that I've never had an issue/leak from the pump until after spending time cleaning the bottom of the motor and replacing the pan gasket. Now with the motor running, I can watch the oil coming from the smaller seal on the front of the pump.

This week I'm up at camp with about 180 sixth graders and in a cabin with 20 of them so, at least for the moment, the oil leak is at the bottom of my list (and that's saying a lot because I have major issues with leaks and things being dirty). Which is the exact reason why I've relegated the oil leak to the bottom of the list as I just went into the bathroom (there's four toilets) and one has a turd on the seat and another is filled to the rim with waste and paper. Obviously, a mandatory cabin meeting will take place after dinner.

I agree it is nasty but, "fixing" the 6th grader is an extreme step to thin the gene pool from this being handed down to another generation, don't you think?

;D

Then again, it may be the appropriate step.  That is truely nasty.  Did you make this offender clean up the mess and unclog the toilet?

Before you all get Medieval on that 6th grader, realize that Chris teaches kids with pretty special needs both physical, emotional, developmental, and parentally-inherited. Yeah, its nasty, but for any parent who ever has raised a kid, its a brick in the road. Chris does deserve some tremendous accolades for dealing with this for someone else's kid, but he's a pretty special and rare Edu-ma-kater anyway.  ;)

You're a top bloke, River. And think of all the stories you'll have to tell the other farts in the nursing home in later years  ;D

Yeah,I echo Cal's comment, I was joking around...about fixing him.
11-13 year old boys can be quite crude and sometimes hygiene is not something they care alot about.  Emotional  and psychological scars can be the slowest to heal and kids can be the worst to one another.
I've raised a daughter and son and have gone through several unpleasant adolescent things they inflicted as well as was inflicted upon them or myself growing up.  My kids are in their mid-late 20s now.
Any kids tend to have rough patches somewhere growing up.  Those with special needs even moreso.

Camp will be over soon Chris, unless you have become a camp teacher...

Thanks for the nice words but I'm just doing what I can do. There are some easier cases involving learning disabilities that I handle but I'm best at dealing with difficult children who are diagnosed with an emotional disturbance, although, over the last 5 years I've been getting a lot of students with autism spectrum disorder/developmental delays too because both populations benefit from very consistent and structured expectations/routines. Every year I dread going to camp but another strong staff member (a counselor) and I buddy up in a cabin and stack it with 20-25 difficult children and run it militantly and spend as much time as possible with the students. Where most staff will dine together at a table, we eat with the students so that we can continually prompt them on certain things (even basic table manners). Generally speaking, I can get these kids to do anything because of the relationship that is built but, after camp, it's noticeably stronger. It's a decent feather in my cap when a student won't budge for a principal, security officer or anyone else in the building but will immediately come with me when I ask nicely after putting in so much time.

I'm tired now and going to bed.

One of the things I want to take care of this winter is the clutch that slips every once in a while. I'm sure it's the original and in need of replacement so I probably won't bother with measuring the friction discs. I know I need 7 friction discs and metal plates as well as 4 springs. Obviously I need a gasket too. Is that all in terms of parts?

Also...the manual mentions needing to use a dial gauge on the basket in order to determine if a shim is necessary but I haven't seen anything like that in any write up or video I've seen. Can anyone help?

Thank you I've seen that. It mostly deals with the lifter sleeve and push rod which are fine in my case. I'm more interested in finding parts. Four into 1 has the friction discs but all 7 of them would be over $100 so I'm hoping to find them cheaper. DSS is out of stock and I haven't found them elsewhere.

Also wanting to know if anyone's used a dial gauge on the basket to determine the need for a shim.

Honda wants almost $13 for each friction disc, $15 for each plate, and $6 for each spring so 4 into 1 isn't much different. I'm guessing the plates will probably be okay but the manual says to check them with a feeler gauge so I'll probably end  up pulling it all apart and seeing where things are and then ordering parts. And while I'm at it, I'll inspect everything on the left engine cover side as well.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis
