Just wanted to update this. I swapped out the cracked rocker cover with the 78 one that was sitting on a shelf. I decided to clean it up myself and then paint it. I used VHT Cast Alloy and it came out great. I didn't clear it this time and it didn't turn a golden color which is perfect. I'm happy to say that, during the last several months, I have ridden the bike with no issues at all. I also pulled the stock front fender and struts and installed a carbon shorty fender that Shortround made. This allowed me to go in and swap to a less viscous fork oil and soften up the front end (since I'm not worried about that full fender hitting the header any longer). Hagons are coming.

I've had some horrible pain in my right elbow that I think may be due to the clip ons. I've never had this elbow pain before. I may be changing to some low superbike bars. I have some ordered and will see what they look like (I'll be able to pull the shaved top clamp and install a stock one and the bars while leaving the Woodcrafts in place). Unfortunately, I do think this will mean some rewiring because I don't think the wiring for the Motogadget buttons is long enough but we'll see. If it's not then I will likely also take the opportunity to do something different with the gauges since the mini speedo quit long ago.

Lastly, I've begun to get much more comfortable with the bike and am riding it differently (in terms of the power band). I recently noticed that it stumbles at WOT. It did it at 6000' and seemed to get better as I climbed to 9000' but I'm going to ride to a few towns further up the mountain (where things will top out around 11'000) and see if it's better. I'm 105 now so we'll see what happens higher up in altitude before deciding to try 110 again.

You will probably have to go down in jets, not up if you plan to ride in the higher elevations. Less air, less fuel.

It would be interesting for you to pull some plug chops while up there. I doubt you'll ever get your bike to behave consistently as you span 6-7,000 ft of elevation changes in your riding  :-\ Limit of carbs I'm afraid.

I may not have been clear. I’m not looking to tune the bike to run better at 11 thousand feet and above. I simply want to utilize the altitude as a diagnostic tool in order to tell whether or not the stumble clears up as I go higher in altitude as this will let me know that less air (more fuel) hints at a move to 110 main might be needed.

Very difficult to find any place above me where it’s safe to do a chop at wot on high altitude mountain roads (for any length of time that it really should be done at). And yes...very tough to find a perfect tune for my situation but, as I said, riding higher in the power band (which I had to do the other day to outrun a storm) revealed this issue which I had never experienced before over the last year because I wasn’t using even 3/4 throttle.

Ride it like you stole it, Chris.  Well, you don't have to ride it like a raped ape, but the 500/550 (especially one refreshed as yours) can handle some WOT and higher revs now and again.

Yeah I just never realized I had this issue way up top and if bumping up to 110 will clear it up and leave everything else as is then...great.

Another update. Had a friend in from out of town and we did some backpacking so today is the first day I’ve been able to mess with the bike. I confirmed the jets in there were 105 and decided to drop to 100 and try things. What a difference that made! I rode it around town for about 6 miles to warm it up and then went outside of town and grabbed 3/4 throttle in third and was alarmed at how it pulled and kept pulling. Wide open was the same.

I just got back from a ride down to 6 thousand feet and all the way back up to 10 thousand feet the bike is significantly different now anywhere from 1/2 to wot. Everything else is the same. Idles great. Takes off from a stop beautifully. But now it’s a different bike up top. What a fun ride that was!

Thanks guys. I went back and read what I typed and I'm not sure what happened. My mind was thinking of dropping from 105 to 100 but, apparently, my fingers wanted to be rich. Either way, I was going to try something and see how it ran. I'm not even sure how I ended up thinking 105 was where I needed to be in the first place (especially since I dropped from 40 to 38 to make things happy down low).

I may need a larger helmet because of the sh!t eating green I have every time I ride the thing now.

My speedometer has been dead for a while now so I'm looking to upgrade (open to suggestions) and, unfortunately, that will mean doing some rewiring. While I'm there I may swap from the clip on bars to some Renthal super low risers as well. Then I need to get the tank and covers painted.

In the last few days I’ve ridden the bike 300 miles with no issues. I did go back into the carbs to try 98 mains and that’s where things have ended up. A run down the mountain to 6000’ is great and today I ran it all the way back to 11,000’ and explored some old mining ruins and it was just as nice. It’s so nice to just ride and not be worried about plug chops.

The big complaint I have right now is discomfort. I love the way the bike looks but a hundred miles or more is painful. Particularly with a tendon in my right elbow. I ordered Renthal ultra low bars and was able to install them while keeping the Woodcrafts on so I could see and feel the difference. It felt significantly taller and I didn’t care for it. Those bars are 3” rise. I was able to track down a set of CB400 bars and they will be here Saturday. They are 1.5” rise and slightly narrower but I’m hoping they will be what I need. I’m still using stock pegs. If I think they will work I’ll start swapping them over and hope my throttle/clutch cables and brake line will still work. I’ve decided to just replace the mini speedometer I currently have and use the money I’ll save on new Hagon shocks.

I did consider sticking with the MG theme but I don’t know if I wanna drop that much on a gauge. We’ll see. Winters are long up here. At the moment, nobody seems to have mine in stock. Maybe that’s a sign.

This is the one I have. Instructions said it was supposed to be mounted with some sort of isolator to help with vibrations and I don’t think what I did was good enough. I found some isolators from DCC and installed them and the tach has been fine.

Very cool day today.  Chris aka riverfever was vacationing in Southern California with his supercool wife and we got to meet up.  Chris went for a short blast on my FZ09 and I think he has acquired an appreciation for that killer triple motor!

Great meeting you, Chris (and Heather).  I hope you enjoyed your stay in the Golden State.  It doesn't suck!

Yes, she's the genuine article - a very cool wife, too.  Not a blow up, real doll or figment of his imagination.

Hahahaha. It was awesome to meet you as well Don. The FZ was nuts. I still can’t believe how much torque that bike has. For about two days prior to that, all I could think about was a 55 Bel Air that I saw at a car show. It was perfect. But since then, I can’t stop thinking about that ride. Thank you for trusting me with it. It was nice sitting with Heather and talking to you.

We did fit in a car show during the trip. We spent 5 days in Encinitas (Don suggested the town) and it was cool. Laid back, surf town. We hung out at the beach, I fished in the surf, and planned the trip to see a car show within walking distance from where we were staying. The show was awesome. It’s a monthly show in town and I couldn’t get over how many cool cars were there. We then went to Laguna Beach and stayed there for 2 days at a small resort (The Ranch at LB) and just laid by the pool both days and drank whiskey. And yes...Heather is real and she is great. She understands me and, more importantly, puts up with me.

I did make a purchase recently. I decided to go with a Motoscope Pro gauge. I also got my CB400 bars. They are much less drastic than even the super low Renthal bars (these are 1.5” rise). I think they’re going to be great. At this point, I think I’m going to get through the rest of this riding season and then swap bars and do a bit of a rewire. I will likely swap out my 2 button right control for another 3 button to control the gauge. I have always struggled a bit with how I want this bike to end up looking in the end (particularly with paint). However, with these 400 bars, I now think I want to do a 70s color/theme but with a bit of a modern/custom twist. Obviously, I need to talk with a painter but I’m thinking something along the lines of the blue color (either from the 550 or the 750 and it doesn’t have to be the exact color) with a bit more flake to it. I think I’d like the original Honda emblem to be painted on in white and then pinstriped around in black. Around the knee dents I think I’d like a line in gold leaf (maybe sandwiched by black pinstripes). Probably nothing on the side covers but possibly 76 in nice gold leaf and black pinstripes.

After that I think I’m done. I’ll rebuild wheels at some point but no rush. I actually think I want another bike now. Originally, I was eyeing the new KTM 790 Adventure but I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t been looking at FZ09 models from 2015-2016.
