In most cases on most carbs pods will rob you of power and ridability. If you must use pods a quality brand name like K&N are the only ones to use. The factory airbox has hundreds of hours of development in their design to provide the best performance, using anything else will be almost impossible to better the airbox performance across the range while riding. Velocity stacks make power at the expense in most cases of lack of filtration possibly causing extensive damage. Stack are most prevalent on race applications where rebuilding the motors are part of a routine schedule.
Here is a good thread explaining why cheap pods don't work:
http://www.caferacer.net/forum/technical/19639-pod-filter-thread-geeto-2.html

Putting a proper size pod on the back end of the airbox will not choke out the power like pods on the carbs themselves.

So you like the idea? At least better than pods on carbs directly?

Don't ride in the rain.
Don't ride through street puddles.
Don't ride over ANY street deposited liquids or debris.
Don't ride over rocks or pebbles that the tire can pick up and fling on the filter (and rider).

Don't ride.

Great idea.

Why not print a picture of an open triangle, and paste it onto each side cover?  Make several so that you can change the "scenery" when looking through the bike.

Or, how about this?  Replace the side covers with flat screens and tiny cameras, to project the image from the other side onto each flat screen?  That would hide all the "ugly" but functional stock bits you abhor.  You could also attach multi-mirrors to your riding apparel so the bike will look as good as the pictures even while you are actually riding it!

Yes, I won't argue that it will work much better than pods on carbs themselves. I like the look pods give you but I will never sacrifice performance for looks on a daily rider. The filters in your pictures look like they won't flow as much air as what the factory filter would which is why I specified "the proper size".
TT beat me to it while I went back to look at the pic to see no rear fender or guard which let your tire shoot all kinds of road crap and water at your carb, not a good idea.

When I bought my bike, there were pod filters on it. Air box was long gone and did not come with the bike.  I have gone through everything on the bike, tuned to perfection (or so I thought) I even switched to K&N brand pods I got for a great deal. I was happy. Then a little over a week I rode a friend's bike ('74 Cb750) with stock air box. I have since posted an ad for air box in parts wanted section and am waiting for it to show up!

I don't want you to misunderstand...that's not my bike. Just because you said "your", I wanted to clarify. I put that picture there to illustrate was I was talking about.

But I totally agree. My bike will have front and rear fenders. I wouldn't want to get wet but the last thing I'd want is water and crap thrown at the air filter. And the first picture was from DoTheTon I think where a guy had a K&N rep calculate the size filter he'd need for his CB550 and he linked to an even SMALLER filter.

Let me find the link...

Nope, I was wrong. It's from this forum, not DoTheTon.

That's what I want to prevent, haha. I just want to know if the air box itself is what channels the air or if it's the plastic plenum. I'm thinking the air box mainly just hides the filter and shields it from water and crap while the plastic plenum that contains the stock velocity stacks is what is needed for engine performance.

Abhor is a strong word.

I have a '74 125 that I fully restored to stock and it's awesome. So I don't abhor the "functional stock bits".

Too Tired fits you. I think you must be a sad angry old feeble man that wants us to keep all things the way they are and never try to change them. Do you ever go outside and not yell at the kids to get off your lawn?

On a side note, surely the 550 can't power TWO flat screens and cameras! I'll look into this.

I like Davez's post. I find almost everyone running crap pods try to justify them by saying "my bike runs just fine with them? That's because they have not ridden one of the same bikes to know how much better they run with the proper equipment.

What am I pushing? This is TwoTired not you.

Anyway, when the time comes for this modification I'm going to try it and see what happens unless someone chimes in and says I'll have the same problems as putting pods directly on the carbs. But definitely first I'm going to get my bike running perfect with the stock air box and exhaust so I have a baseline. Maybe I'll even get another plenum to try my mod with so I can always go back the stock if this fails.

I've had these on my bike since I got it....  The worked awesome on my old 810 motor with ported head etc.  They work like sh!t on my stock 71 motor.  For looks .. They can't be beat...  We shall see if I can't get it running up to par.  I have ridden plenty of stock airboxed 750's....  My old motor with these pods would eat them across the board.  One thing I will add is that they have velocity stacks inside of them... They are probably 35 years old.

DaveBarbier, I saw your reply after mine and thought you were referring to my post. Wasn't paying attention to who you were quoting.

Mitchie, what I see on that bike pictured are not pods. While your 810 with porting would eat stock 750s with an airbox is comparing apples and oranges. Your 810 may have run even better without the pods ( if they were pods and not what is pictured above) The velocity stack in the airbox is what it is all about. The cheap pods have a flange  where they mount to the carb restricting airflow and sometimes venturi's in the mouth of the carb that can't be restricted. All of this is pictured in the thread I posted.

Dave, with respect, TT is a top bloke (especially with 550s) and that's just his way. Don't cut your nose off to spite your face, you may need him in the future.

I like Davez's post. I find almost everyone running crap pods try to justify them by saying "my bike runs just fine with them? That's because they have not ridden one of the same bikes to know how much better they run with the proper equipment.

I have ridden my CB750F2(s) with both stock airbox, and pods (S&B) set-up. You absolutely CAN get them as good as stock with pods. Problem is, IMO, most people don't take the time to tune properly.

OSN, it depends on the pods and you will notice I said K&N and another brand that slips my mind right now are quality pieces. Emgo pods on some carbs you can tune till you're blue in the face, their design will make it absolutely impossible to make them work correctly because they block important vacuum venturi's. Plus the cheaper pods with paper filter media don't filter worth a crap.
