Well, another interesting thread. Full of drama, name calling, English lessons and a vague reference to the subject.
Oh, and don't forget the Pop Corn. I made a batch while reading the posts.
If you want "theater" style pop corn, then you have to use Coconut oil
laced with a magic ingredient called "Flavacol"to pop the corn
which is what they use in the theaters but is not available at you local Piggly Wiggly.
I ordered four pounds of the stuff on line from a wholesaler, I like pop corn that much.

After the corn is popped, pour some melted butter, also laced with Flavacol all over the pop corn, sit back and enjoy!

Now, intermission is over, so back to my seat for more action packed drama!!

Does anyone have any experience with a "breadbox" air intake system?

I have one on the shelf in excellent cond and have thought about using it on a future build, I think it looks cool....ha!

I would think my filter is the breadbox type, even though I call it sandwich:

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=99066.0

the bike was running OK with pods before I built this, but I did not have enough experience with it to tell if there is a major improvement or not.

The way it is setup now, it really hauls as$ and I love the acceleration and power, not sure what jets, but the needle is on #4.

One thing that is not brought up enough in these pod filter debates is that not all pods are equal. I feel like pod is such a blanket term and most people think of the cheap knock-off filters that come from China and assume that all filters of that style will perform the same as those. I have seen success with K&N's pods on the CB750 in the past. I have had success on a dyno with the cheap chinese knock-off pods (that claim that they have velocity stacks and claim to be an exact copy of the "top brand of filter"). The problem I saw with the cheap pods after the jetting was right was not on the dyno or at low speeds, but rather at higher speeds or riding with a cross wind. It seemed like they were easily affected by the pressure pulses caused by the wind around the pod. I tried putting shields around them to help reduce this and saw an improvement at speed, but I did not care for the look with the shields on there. I'm sure I could have spent more time trying to make shields that were better looking or that functioned even better, but I never bothered to put in the time or the money just to get away with some cheap pods.

I have found that with these bikes the safest bet is the stock air box, it tends to be less headaches all around.
The most dangerous part of a motorcycle is the nut that connects the handlebars to the footpegs.

As far as torque and hp charts go, try any dyno facility and you can see many results.
I am not going to run that down for you.
Those charts have been posted on this forum .

From what I understood from your build is that you never could get the 78 "PD" carbs to work well no matter how much time or $ you spent on them which is why you ended up using carbs from a K0. Is this correct? My 77 750F has PD's as well so I guess that means I better be on the look out for K0 carbs too eh?

No that is not correct.
I did get the 1978 carbs to work very well Those were the 1978 carbs in my video I posted.
I decided to use 1969 carbs because I liked them much more and got a very good deal on a set on Ebay for only $100
because the backing plate was missing.
I bought a K2 backing plate which fit perfect.
I liked the 1969 carbs for the following reasons:

1.  No choke cable required .
2.  The 1969 carbs had a simple flip up/down choke lever.
3.  I could change all of the jets without removing the carbs from the motorcycle.
4.  The 1969 carbs weighed much less without lifter arms and connecting shafts.
5.  The 1969 carbs can have the slides removed  for needle position changes
without removing the carbs from the engine.
6.  All adjustments on the 1969 carbs can be done without burning your hands
     because they are conveniently located.
7.  The float bowls on the 1969 carbs come off easily with a spring clip. No screws!

It was extra work changing to the 1969 carbs but the pay off was all
of the above mentioned advantages.

I have rebuilt every model of CB750 carbs. But I think the 1969-70 carbs are the best of all.

Problem with the '69' carbs, they are a bear to sync and won't stay in sync, individual cables move around just re-fitting the tank.
They are the 'best' for all the other reasons though

The one I have is different, believe it to be the Henry Abe one like this...

At least the Henry Abe Breadbox filters uses the stock Honda airbox venturi tubes on the couple I had.

I've got an Abe box with the stock rubbers in it, I had it on my 77 for a bit. It worked well but I wasn't properly jetted and put the stock airbox back on, I was running lean from the looks of the plugs. Would like to re visit that set up, it ran very smooth through the throttle range that much ill say. Weather it's better than stock, remains to be seen. It's def better at delivering still air than a pod, you can block off the top and sides from cross drafts. The one thing that was not so hot is its susceptiblity to getting wet, the foam filter element is out in the open like a pod screen and I live in a rainy part of Canada. Once I find some time I'll set it back up and really see how I like it, I picked one up for my kz1000. It came with pods and finding a stock airbox for a Zed is bloody expensive...

Problem with the '69' carbs, they are a bear to sync and won't stay in sync, individual cables move around just re-fitting the tank.
They are the 'best' for all the other reasons though

They WILL stay in sync. (1969-70 carbs)
This is how:
Set the throttle cables so that all 4 carbs open exactly at the same time.
Make sure all 4 slides are bottomed out.
Put your finger on each slide through the carb intake and turn the
throttle to feel the exact moment the slide starts to move.
Use the individual adjusters on the top of each carb to get the slack out of the 4 cables.

Then sync the carbs.

Make sure all 4 idle screws are on the "T" mark. Do not move them.
Now... To raise or lower the idle (of all 4 carbs) DO NOT use the individual idle screws.
Just use the adjustment on the throttle
cable up by the throttle that adjusts the play in the throttle cable.

You will not have anymore problems.

Oh, and don't forget the Pop Corn. I made a batch while reading the posts.
If you want "theater" style pop corn, then you have to use Coconut oil to pop the corn laced with a magic ingredient called "Flavacol"

I ordered four pounds of the stuff on line from a wholesaler, I like pop corn that much.

After the corn is popped, pour some melted butter, also laced with Flavacol all over the pop corn, sit back and enjoy!

Relax Lucky, just grab some popcorn and enjoy the show. The only problem I had with pods on my 550 was when I was riding at highway
speeds on a VERY gusty windy day, the carbs were getting hit with gusts of wind from all directions and with no airbox to "calm" that air down
it made the bike run good 1 second and run like crap the next depending on how a crosswind hit me. I couldn't see how any jetting could
accommodate for that. Putting the stock airbox back on did.

My biggest disadvantage is that this was my first 550, heck it was my very first bike so I had no clue how a 550 should run but putting the stock
airbox on a generally stock engine made fine tuning it a whole lot easier. However I am open to the idea of using pods or stacks on a modified
engine.

I bought my '78 CB750 and it came with pods. It ran good, but on windy days or high speeds the throttle band was inconsistent.

Pulled off the pods and checked my jets. Jets were stock. Put on the stock airbox with a K&N filter.

Biggest seat-of-the-pants increase I have done yet on the CB750. It's all consistent now. Felt like it was designed to be that way. Oh wait, it was.
