Another 550 with a 500 engine
« on: September 28, 2013, 08:08:25 PM »
So , like last month, I picked up a bobber 550 project

and before that, I traded some stuff for this 500

so I used the tank and some other stuff from the 550 to finish the 500, this

which leaves a very ugly 550 titled frame with the  500 black tank, and spoke wheels. Fortunately, I just rebuilt this 500 engine from the black 500, and was going to keep it as a spare, but why?

Here's a perfectly good titled frame looking for an engine. So that's the plan, 500 motor in the 550 frame. I can reunite the 550 engine to this frame after rebuild later on, I suppose, if this is really taboo and demands change.
I Bondo'd the black tank and shot it orange, needed something so I blacked out the sides, similar to stock, needed more so I gave it racing stripes too, not enough so added white pinstripes....that's enough. the rest of the" to be" painted parts are getting primer now , frame is stripped down and getting ready for black paint. There will be pics after clear coat, not ready to show yet.

Nice paint work but, I think Clemson's colors of Orange and Dark Blue would have looked better than the black.
It is busy with all the striping. I think it would have to grow on me. I like orange, so it isn't the orange putting me off.

Caught up on this week's work so far so, I took today off to paint. I love the smell of drying paint in the morning. Got it all cooking in the sunshine ,around 75 degrees until sundown and it goes indoors till tomorrow afternoon when the real fun can start.
did a little frame painting after prep that took 2 nights

Had a fiberglass front fender hanging around for a while, thought I might use that and a repaired sidecover, oh ,and might as well paint the light bucket to match.

Guess I'll spend a few hours polishing up mounting bolts and stuff so it can be rolled around.

Thanks .I shot some high gloss black on it and changed the thinner that I cut the paint with and for some reason , it seems even glossier than usual. or maybe it's just the sunshine.
polished up some lower fork parts but that's as far as I got, been pushing off oil and filter changes on one of my diesel trucks and couldn't let it go any longer.
like to get a roller this weekend, lots of stuff left to polish before it can go back together.

Cut the back fender, primed, painted ,painted some more, pinstriped and clear coated everything. very shiny , I like it, can hardly wait to see what these parts look like when they are on. Couldn't snap a pic cause I promised myself that I would try to show some self control and not go in the shop if things aren't dry.
That is a very adult way of dealing with stuff like this, I guess,.....not a big fan of adult type thinking, we'll see if it pays off.

Okay, it's all dry and has no fingerprints....adult.
All the parts are on , I like the back view

I like the side view

but something is bugging me, I think it's the headlight

I'm thinking that it might be too much ,and perhaps it should go back to black. any thoughts?

It's certainly on the bright side, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  One member recently went for day-glo green, and that was MUCH brighter.  If the orange is what you like, why care what others think!?  I really like the details of the paint pattern, including the contrasting color of the filler neck.  Personally, I would nix an ALL BLACK (not the Rugby team) paint scheme - and prefer two colors.  This bike would also look good with black in place of orange keeping the contrasting stripes.

Orange isn't my favorite color but, when I brought it outside to buff it, I'm getting to like it allot , and the buffing can really hold off until next season

So you know that this is the last of the parts bikes that are going together and the extra this or that around here has been running out. Enter the only rack of carbs left to rebuild

Notice Fin yellowjacket near fingers, ouch.... That's not even the worst of it, take a look at #4

The other 3 don't look anything like this on the inside, just this one, and there are no spares left, yes if anyone has a spare , I'd be interested.

Thanks Matt.

Spent a few hours wiring  tonight. This bike came with the nicest looking controls on the bars... unfortunately the PO decided that he wanted to minimize the electric system and cut all the wires at the switches. Why? Why do they always screw with the wires?
Cleaned up the harness, installed it and got the clutch side wired. Throttle side tomorrow, then spend some time in the bucket and connect them all.
   Have to order
a new ignition and find some nice blinkers, think I'd like some smaller aftermarket ones for a change
 new chain and sprockets
 battery
 make a seat
 time the spark
 get correct plug caps
         Gaining on it

All the wiring has been cleaned up/replaced/repaired, connected, and the bucket is closed. Found an Emgo headlight ring, didn't fit like the factory unit that was all beat up. Even all beat up ,it fit better than the Emgo
Found some nice little blinkers, mini brushed aluminum on the front , and a sudo carbon fiber on the back.
Ordered a bunch of stuff last week chain, sprockets, grips, bar end mirrors, carb kits, and stuff that I don't remember so it'll be a surprise to me when it comes in,whatever it is...
Aided by another member, the carb dilemma is over, a package was waiting for me on Monday containing a rack of 069A's Thank you. Initial cleaning has begun, will dismantle them this week and soak them in carb cleaner.

Stuff came in, very happy, nice way to turn around a crappy day.
Braided brake line with fresh banjo bolts and crush washers. Yay! All hooked up to a fresh non Honda master cylinder
it's a Hybusa (I think) MC and it cost just a few more dollars than a rebuild kit for the old MC. and no foolin around.

Then there was some grips and mirrors that came in

and of course the not so exciting  chain and sprockets which I hope to spend my evening installing while dancing with the stars or something silly is being watched in the house

Of course there is a couple of items on dackorder with Honda but for now I'm a happy camper.

Chain and rear sprocket is on. Clutch cover is on and working.
Here's an answer to a stupid question  that all 500 owners ask when working on that cover and drop the bearing that goes between the actuator and rod.  About twenty five feet.
That's how far that little bastage can roll on a clean floor, and yes it can take a half hour to find even with fresh batteries in the flashlight.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.

well *I* personally love the paint job.  orange has always been my least favorite color, but you make it look darn classy.  and for me at least, i think the multiple stripes that you added make it look "tougher" than just a single bordering pinstripe segregating the colors.  that's my 2.  you do nice work!
