And as much as I've been riding... (2,500 miles in the last two months) I figured that by the end of the summer the money saved in gas will have paid for the bike! Including insurance and all of the parts I've bought for it so far!
I said the same thing to my wife last week. She said "the problem is, you wouldn't have put those miles on your truck because you wouldn't have been out joy riding." Guess she has a point.

'78 F3 - 40-42 mpg.

Re the original mileage question: I am currently getting 49 mp(US)g on the same bike, an '82 CB650SC.

I have two engines... the one I bought it with had 46,000 km.  A valve job and new head gasket made it big difference in mpg but the engine was showing it age.   I bought another engine last Fall with about 7,000 miles on it.  After several months of tweaking I am getting great mileage but I am getting the symptoms of a lean condition.  I am currently increasing the mixture in small steps.  I expect a bit of degradation in mpg as I fiddle.

My '77 550K is getting mid to high 30's.  I suspect my problem is that the majority of my trips are short and in the city.  The engine is heavily choked for many of my miles.  Guess I could let it idle longer to warm to non-choked temp, but I figure that would burn as much if not more gas while adding no miles to the calculation.

I'll just have to move further away from work and into the country if I wana save gas!  ;D
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Hmm... I think my 650's running a little lean... I get 57-60 mpg all day long.

When I fixed my alternator my mileage went from 60 to 40. Now that's one hell of a drop! I ran it that way for a while, but after I ran it out of gas a couple of times I disconnected the alternator again (and all of the fuses to keep my battery from running down) and I'm back up to the 60mpg figure. It had more top-end power and a little more mid-throttle response, but around 3000rpm (where I normally drive) it runs just as good, if not better without the alternator. Why in the hell would the alternator pull my engine so much???

Well, I'm now on my 2nd CB 650, and both of them, without any particular tweaking, jets, etc do nicely 50-52 mpg. And  I'm not really following the speed limits, y'know :)
And I believe that with some careful adjusting and carb synching I would get even more...

I have a 78 550 K and I am getting about 28 mpg.  I sure would like to improve that.

I've been watching my 750 mileage pretty close all summer. Initially, my front brakes were grabbing a little, but since I fixed that, I've been running consistently about 21-25 in the city and the last highway trip. was 44.

My 77 550K has gotten 48 - 49 mpg the last two tankfuls. It has a Mac 4 into 1, but I'm not sure of the jetting. I'm pretty confident though that the carbs could definitely stand a cleaning/rebuild.

I have not rode my 78 550 since I got my 72 500 awhile back. All the oil leaking out the heads I have not repaired it or fixed it. I rode it to work a few months ago and did notice my 72 was geared a bit lower than my 78. I'm in Tx now and will do a sprocket count on it when I get back. I since have  bought a 75 goldwing and ride that daily. I'm going to figure out the mileage when I get back.

Just checked the milage last night on the mostly stock '76 750F and ended up with 42mpg.  Mixed city/highway with max speed of 60-65 mph or so.  I found that if I push it for extended periods over 60-65 mph, the milage drops considerably.

These days I average 45mp(imperial)g on the 650. It did do 50+ once, but I'm not sure why, since all of my rides are highway and at the same average speeds.

Hey Danwalls,
did you ever tune it up? You should be getting better milage

I have a great way to easily boost your gas milage.  It is very simple to do and requires NO mechanical ability and best of all NO modifications to your bike!

All you have to do is reset the trip odometer every other time you fill up.  I can get close to 100 MPG by using this simple technique!

After putting 102.5 mains in my '79 CB650 I'm getting 42mpg. This is with a lot of hot-rodding and trips to 90 mph at WOT. I'm going to drive a little nicer this tankfull to see how it does.

Good idea. Or better still, don't worry about it all and just feed the beast when it needs feeding. As long as it is running ok, who cares! I long ago stopped trying to rationalise why my 650 doesn't get as good mileage as my VFR800 did.....I realised you cannot compare apples to bananas, so why bother.

My riding conditions are pretty consistent, very little city/stop-n-go. I check the mileage every so often to see that it is the same. Any significant decrease usually means something has changed and needs looking into.

2001 VFR800 50mpg when I use all 12k rpm, 60mpg when I use "only" the first2/3 throttle  ;D That's a minimum of 200 miles per tank
Note UK gallons boys...

That's exactly what I got on my '00 VFR on one steady-state riding highway trip. Ah the joys of a well set-up fuel injection system!

Well, this will sound incredible, but IT"S TRUTH! I just did a weekend ride on my CB 650, and i got..... 76 miles per gallon! Now, I know, you say, Bull, etc. Well, there IS a catch. It was 1st weekend drive for my wife on her Virago, so I NEVER went faster than 50m....  ;D Hence the result.
But on the more serious note - yes, it is possible, but you need to drive slooooooow  :(

I hope I calculated it right. For metrics (it's me!) i did 230 kms on 8,5l of fuel. No kidding! My wife's Virago did about 50m per gal. Well, I always said that Honda's better!

I read an article many years ago that claimed that Honda set up the carbs on the bikes to deliver optimal fuel mileage at steady state cruising at about 90kph, or just over 50mph.

There's no question that going slow will be easier on the pocket but at times it can be very boring!

I have a '72 350F and I got 92 miles before hitting the reserve, in the city of Philly.
I figure that makes it around 34MPG.  that sounds a little low.  I bet I am running slightly rich,
I don't know how to check the timing on a Martek 440 electric timing,
And I could use a new gasket for the petcock bowl, as it weeps EVER so slightly
also need to do a carb tune and
plug chop to verify my assumption of the rich conditions.
