Those of us with the K8s have a larger tank so we dont have to worry about going dry as soon!

My 750A averages between 30 and 33 mpg, day in and day out.  If I get it out on the road and ride it long enough with out starting and stopping, it has been known to hit 35.  That Hondamatic struggles some with my fat a$$ on it.

Hi there.  Been posting a lot lately, but have been getting some good responses.  Specs say that my 76 CB400f has a 3.1 gallon tank.  I have been unable to find the reserve capacity.  I can't believe it's costing $10/fill.  My question is:

What kind of gas mileage do you get on your CB400F?  I get ~75miles on 87 octane gas before needing a switch to reserve, and since I'm not sure about the reserve capacity, I don't want to push it Kramer-style.  I seem to recall reading 50mpg.

Thanks in advance, gang.

Never, tried figuring out miles per gallon but my 77440f at about 100 miles I have to switch to reserve. The furthest I've gone on a tank is 125 miles. By the way have you cleaned your tank? I was getting that kind of milage before I cleaned mine.

I run 89 octane. Wonder if mileage would improve with a little higher octane?

Nope.  You'd get the same on 87 as well.

Just filled my 77' 550f up today.  At $2.84/gal I put in 3.1725 gal.......thats filled right to the neck!  Did the math and it came out to 42 miles to the gal.  Not bad for a 28 yr old bike.

I'm glad to hear that for MPG.  I have a 7855K and gets 42-45 MPG pretty regularly.  I've only had it two seasons and wasn't sure if that was good or not..... seemed decent.  My 83GPz550 gets mid 50's, but that's from another era!

These wonderful little birds are great flyers, delicious eating, excellent for training your hunting dog, and just fun to shoot,or stuff and keep around the house.  Bobwhites can be put with other types of Quail and have very large penis's.  Quail are very popular with the babes.

78 550k whats your secret on that great gas mileage?  You must do alot of coasting for that gas mileage!!!  new motor? No hot rodding?

I understand gas is yet to go up.  I can't imagine paying what bike54 is paying in the u k.

talked with a guy just this morning in Portland, Ore. and he said gas there was $2.52....great price.   I knew I best keep my bike not only because it fun but it curbs the cost of transportation.

Mike, I have a 75' 750k that gets 45 mpg and a 78' 750k that gets 52 mpg. I just got the 75' a couple of months ago and I was curious why it did not get as good of mileage as the 78'.  Both are stock, at least I know the 78' is because I bought it brand new and I haven't added anything to it. Also, from what little inspecting I've done on the 75', it appears stock as well. By the way, I paid $80 less the new 78' (1995.00) verses 2075.00 for the 30 years old 75'. So the way I figure it they are good investment regardless of gas mileage.

I asked for figures a while back and just a few people knew the figures. Seems that with the gas price getting up you americans are getting more concerned about it.... ;-)

If we were told a couple of years ago how much would we be paying for the gas I would have bet there would have been a riot. But you never know how much you are able to endure... As my grandma used to Say: "Please God don't give us as much as we can endure..."

1982 CB650SC Nighthawk -  I was getting 60 mpg (IMP) or 51/(US gal) right after a valve job but after I cleaned and syncronized the carbs it dropped to 56.  The only other change was a 1/2 turn out on the mixture on #1.  Anyone with the same bike know what the settings are on their carbs.  When I cleaned the carbs they were: #1=1/2 turn, #2=1 turn, #3=1 turn and #4=1-1/2.  Seem unusual to anyone?  Local shop said they would normally start at about 2-1/2.

My 1972 CB750 gets around 45ish in the MPG department.
One of the main reasons I picked this bike up was to save some $$$ on fuel , and so far it has been working out.
Just need to stop adding things to the bike......

The best Ive seen on my 75 550k is 40mpg.  Driving normal.  I should probably try to do as Quail suggests and try taking it real easy to see what kinda mileage I get....but I probably wont!  I know 550s suck the gas at anything over 70mph (5700rpm) sustained because of how they are geared.  I took a trip to Davenport Iowa and back, roughly 500 miles, doing between 80 and 90 on the way up and saw 26 mpg :o Terrible!  But shes pretty well rapped out at those speeds.  Thats what I get for trying to keep up with a Beamer.  They just sail along like its nothin.  I dont mess around getting up to speed so thats probably part of the problem...though I dont consider it one.

Jawshunter:  The carbs on my 75 are different than those on my 78.  I hear from some of the more knowledgable folks here that in 77 they detuned the carbs a bit (leaned them out some) for emissions which would increase milage.  Now this is a 550 Im talkin about but the same probably applies to your 750s.  Theres another thread on that subject.

damn, I seem to be stuck around 30 mpg, the bike runs great but guzzles gas!!  I guess I need to keep it out of WOT for a bit.  Any other reasons why this might be?

My '77 750K gets 40-43 MPG, depending on whether I'm driving into or with the wind. BTW, gas here is still between $2.86 and $2.96 a gallon. I paid $3.69 a gallon in California a month ago so I guess I shouldn't complain.
